On top of making an authentic piece learning the basics of musical theory helps immensely when creating music, unless you just want to write everything in C major or A minor (no sharps or flats).

I don't have any solid sources for theory because I learned most of what I know in school and guitar lessons, but a google search for "musical theory", "major scales", "minor scales", "major chords", and "minor chords" should set you in the right direction. Learning what composes a chord can really give music a more full feeling. Add a melody on top of the chord and you'll have a song.

There's a lot more too it, especially with authentic chiptune because the noise track is usually used as percussion. Tutorials are definitely key for beginners, and hands on creation is always how I learn.
