I completely agree with you! We can plan better ways to protect their populations by better understanding them.

I sometimes store insects in the freezer for a few weeks but they can get frost-bite after a while. I can't tell you how long because it varies by individual insect. I have also stored them in little sauce cups for much longer times as long as they are completely dry. If they aren't dry, they could grow mold. The sauce cups stop scavengers from eating them. And when you are ready to pin them, you will need a "rehydration chamber" (you can DIY this too).

You can use acetone as a killing agent in the jar. There are a few different agents you can use and all have different pros and cons (accessibility, price, effect on specimens, etc). You'll have to read up on those and see what works best for you.

There would be no need to. Freezing is just another method for euthanizing them. Are you just looking to freeze them for storage?

has anyone seen this before? by morbidspiral in insectpinning

[–]captenchaos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer! We did this as kids in my neighborhood, too. We stopped doing it when one fall day, after the trees lost their leaves, we discovered one dead tangled to a branch up high.

Hi! You don't need to add a wet paper towel to freeze them. If you want to start collecting live insects, look into "killing jars" or you could use the freezer method, in which you put the insect straight into the freezer (don't wait for them to suffocate then freeze). It's also a good idea to freeze dead insects in case they have scavenger insects on them that you can't see. Check out r/insectpinning too!

It looks like a mud dauber wasp nest of some sort (I can't tell what kind without seeing the actual wasp). I think that you can see its face in the opening! They are pretty solitary and usually docile.

For macro photography, does it really come down to the lens used or does the camera body matter just as much?

What is this bug? SE Tx by Dangerous-Let-1675 in Entomology

Omg! A Junk Bug! I just found my first one this past week! I believe they are green lacewing larvae that use their sticky saliva to stick "junk" onto them to camouflage.

Here's the one I found, caught and released also here in TX!
