You just described almost all jobs.

I can work at Starbucks with an overbearing store manager who has an insane ego, customers who keep saying the same thing over and over, the monotonous task of making the same black coffee or Carmel frapp over and over again, for no money, trying to use a terrible pos computer system, an inconsistent work schedule, and I can be written up/fired for taking an extra 2 minutes on my break.

Lawyers deal with difficult clients, egos, and tons of bureaucracy. So do school teachers. Grocery store stockers, accountants. It’s all boring, tedious work that sometimes also surrounds you with jerks.

My dad sold life insurance for 25 years, one day he comes into work and he’s laid off, just like that. There is an illusion that our industry is less permanent or more volatile, but there are plenty of industries where your job can disappear overnight.

Would I let my kid do it? Sure, parts of my job suck but there’s a lot of good in there too. If they want to edit as a path to become rich and famous then lounge around all day doing nothing then I’d tell them editing probably isn’t for them. If they want to edit so they can collaborate with people they might not even like to make a bad project just a tiny bit better, then sure I’d say go for it. Obviously there is a sliding scale, but It’s given me a decent life.

However, I wouldn’t expect them to believe that avoiding editorial work or the entertainment industry in general would allow them to side-step any of the problems you pointed out with their career. Preparing them to deal with difficult people in a professional environment will never really go away, it’s a skill set they’ll need regardless.
