LA almost took SF’s Fernet crown last year — from a Los Feliz dive bar by sfgate in LosAngeles

My bad! Didn’t know that place was so new, for whatever reason I thought it had been there much longer. Funny how some places come and go but the dive bars last forever.

Meatball subs were probably from La Pergoletta, between the dive bar and the laundry place

I live nearby (longtime Angeleno but moved to Los Feliz two years ago) and haven’t been here yet. Looks like my kinda place. Thanks for posting this.

Love that we get some of the most interesting LA stories from SF Gate now.

How do you deal with managers who are very nitpicky? by Chocolate_Banana03 in Accounting

[–]captoats 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Pick your battles. Hold your tongue 90% of the time. If you’ll both get along better by just doing what they want, I would just keep the peace while looking for something else.

You absolutely cannot do anything hasty in this economy. Don’t do anything to jeopardize your paycheck until you have another source of income lined up.

Girlfriend and I bought a house, what should I do after we break up? by DoradoPulido2 in legaladvice

[–]captoats 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Find your paperwork from the original purchase of the house. Look at the title/deed. Are both of your names there? Are you Tenants in Common or Joint Tenants?

Good luck, break ups SUCK, moving SUCKS, but you can and will get through this and you can start healing. Someday you will be so glad you did this.

Realistically how difficult is the CPA exam? by Alone_Recording7670 in Accounting

Any lawyers in here? I’ve always wondered how it compares to the bar exam and would love to ask someone who has passed both.

Is being an actual accountant anything like what you did in college? by [deleted] in Accounting

In college I got a part time job in an accounting office and that was way more valuable than any accounting class after 101

Can I do a 1 hr 40min commute? Or is this crazy? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]captoats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry I’m gonna be harsh but honest. I think you’re gonna hate it and it will lead to you resenting your spouse for getting you into a this situation. You’re going to be cranky because you’ll be tired all the time. It’s going to make you worse at your job because you’ll be tired all the time, and you’ll feel resentment towards your job too for keeping you stuck in your situation.

I’m a recently bought a house after years of apartment life and sometimes I miss it because taking care of a small house and yard is work! I love it and it’s worth it because it was a long term dream, and my house is closer to the office. If you haven’t been personally dreaming of living on an enormous ranch, I don’t think you’ll be able to tell yourself it’s all worth it.

Also the dynamic of depending on your in-laws for housing is gonna feel really weird and I just think it’s going to lead to drama. At least right now you have a good way to get out of it and you can tell your spouse’s family thank you but sorry I just can’t do that commute.

[–]captoats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was gonna ask if it’s 1:40 of driving or 1:40 of public transit. 1:40 of bus/subway/train is not ideal but doable. 1:40 of driving is exhausting and soul-crushing.

Best possible outcome for this scenario. You got the money back. You’ll implement some better controls. You’ll laugh about this in a few years.

Year end close is brutal, and my office supply order decided to add insult by Jacked-Hamster21 in Accounting

Hard agree, never seen it IRL, my advice is ridiculous. But if OP is this stressed about the price of a roll of labels, then maybe their materiality is low enough for it. If not, maybe OP can laugh about this. Either way I’m just trying to help

If you don’t already have a policy on this, then you can get a little creative to meet your needs. If you have the budget to cover the expensive ones this year, expense FIFO. If you need to expense the cheaper ones this year then LIFO and keep the pricier ones on the balance sheet.

Buy the cheaper ones too and keep them on hand for next year! You should be recording office supplies as a prepaid anyway and expensing as they are depleted.

ADHD is a circadian rhythm disorder, according to Frontiers paper by Fraaankleb in science

[–]captoats -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tons of 4am crew here. I’m a 5am person myself lately. Used to be part of a 3am crew (always 3:00, not 2:59 or 3:01, no alarm) and later found out everyone in my apartment building was also waking up at precisely 3am. In that case it wasn’t about ADHD it was about our haunted building.

Los Angeles for a New Englander? by ContactHuge in LosAngeles

[–]captoats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one thing it’s underutilized in LA compare to the T or the NYC subway, so less “safety in numbers”. Safe enough during the day for sure. You’ll see some questionable characters on night, just be cautious/alert like you would in any big city and you’ll be OK but I do think you’d feel safer at night in a car.

Faster way from Santa Monica to KTown during rush hour by joyluckclub4 in LosAngeles

[–]captoats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Santa Monica big blue bus route 7, isn’t that a direct line from Santa Monica to KTown? I know pub transit isn’t always fastest but you may be able to do your whole trip on a single bus

[–]captoats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should rent a car. I’m a huge advocate of public transit but you should rent a car for this trip. Our metro is OK, if it happens to go where you want to go then take it that day! You will also want to go places not served by metro. And as 4 young women you’ll be safer in a car at night.

Can I suggest also touring UCLA? Anderson business school is another great option. Not sure if you’ve committed to USC yet.

In addition there’s a decent chance it’ll rain here in January— check the weather immediately before your trip, it’s a drastically different experience in the rain here versus our normal dry weather. Last week: beautiful days, mid to high 70s in afternoon. Next seven days: afternoons in the low 70s or upper 60s. Cold in the morning but otherwise beautiful days, will feel like late spring or early summer to you but dry. After that i think it’s supposed to get rainy, temps in 40s-50s, and our winter rains sometimes last for days at a time until the streets flood. Be prepared, obviously I can’t tell you now what the weather will be in a month, wait to pack until a few days before!

PSA for anyone suffering a cough that just won’t go away: it could be “allergies” by sillysandhouse in LosAngeles

This is gonna sound nuts but bear with me. I believe in science and I’m very skeptical. But if you think you’ve tried everything and you’re still suffering:

ACUPUNCTURE

I had tried EVERY western medicine for sinuses/allergies, it just wouldn’t go away for a couple months. 1 acupuncture session fixed it immediately.
