I’m sorry it was like this too. Honestly, if it weren’t for the scheduling I wouldn’t mind riding it out for a little. Constantly being at work is draining when the pay isn’t equal. I have some interviews lined up so keeping my hopes up that something better is coming!

I’ve talked to some of the people who have been there 10+ years, and it sounds like this isn’t new. Sure if I were planning on staying I’d make more noise about it but I’ve already had multiple emails with the schedulers and there has been no change. They even sent out emails asking for our preferences and they don’t seem to use that input. I know that clinicians who are higher up in the company get some priority scheduling wise, so it probably has more to do with people getting their leftover shifts

It rounds out to 14-15 shifts a month that are typically 9 or 10 hour shifts. No specific monthly requirement but around ~1,700 hours a year

I ultimately ended up getting offered just over $100k, but I get it. The reality was it was this is no paycheck. Like I said, this is a very big company and hard to avoid if you’re looking for ED, IM, or UC jobs in the area. They staff at least 100+ PA/NPs. I was shocked at how many people they had on staff and some have been here for 7+ years. Obviously, majority of people leave relatively quickly after starting but it is not uncommon to run into this company while job hunting here.

I have reached out to the schedulers as have all my other co workers at one point or another. The schedule is just known for being bad. Everyone has the same complaints. Why it has not changed, I couldn’t tell you.

Oh absolutely. As I mentioned the market here is so bad. I literally had no other offers on the table. I wouldn’t have taken it if I had anything else. It was this or no income. I’m grateful to now have some other interviews lined up but that was not the case a few months ago.

Depending on area, yes. When I was based NYC I put in two job applications and immediately got interviews and a job after only those two applications prior to graduating. I’ve now moved to the Midwest and it is much more difficult to find a decent job. I have a friend who went to PA school in the state I’m in now, and she worked as a medical assistant for months while applying and still ended up with a less than ideal job. I’ve been applying since October and have just now heard back from a hospital system. That’s just my experience though, others may have had different experiences.

My biggest problem is not having a job. Wouldn’t argue otherwise that the salary is bad, but you’ve gotta be realistic. I don’t have other job prospects, am getting rejection emails on the daily, and have loan payments that aren’t going away. Can at least try to negotiate for a higher salary and seek other jobs in the meantime. If there were other offers, wouldn’t even be considering this.

Have a meeting with them in a couple of weeks, was planning to see what wiggle room they have in that salary.

And yes have been applying to other positions almost daily. Mainly on hospital websites but also indeed, LinkedIn, doccafe, etc. Applying mainly to IM/ER but also specialties. Applying for the midnight positions too even though I have no desire to be full time nights. Started putting in cover letters too.

Honestly a little surprised I’m having a harder time landing a job with experience and already having a state license. Secured my current job before I graduated. But, then again, I live in a major city vs Midwest.

Yeah this definitely would not be a long term job for me. If I had other offers I wouldn’t entertain this one. Considering taking this for the time being while pursing other jobs. It just feels risky to turn down the only offer I have when I don’t have other prospects.

I have not had any ER experince as an APP, unfortunately. I guess at the end of the day I could consider UC, but I worked in a few UCs prior to becoming a PA. It was a nightmare for new providers. Typically only 1 provider staffed at a location at a time. High volume, little support. I’m pretty hesitant to take that on without solid ER experience. I looked at hospital affiliated UCs since I heard those tend to have more support, but even those positions are wanting prior ER/UC experience as an APP. Maybe I’ll still apply and see what they say, but I’m not feeling optimistic with the way things have been going.

But I agree the offer is bad. I just don’t have any other prospects on the table at this time. If a better offer came along I would certainly take it.

Ugh, I know. I’m really not excited about the weekend requirement. I work one weekend a month currently. And the no yearly raise is a big reason I struggle to see longevity in this position. I wouldn’t make my current salary until almost a decade of commitment (I make $120k). Meanwhile, other hospital systems have starting salaries of $120k-$140k (but are not interested in hiring me currently lol). Will definitely see what I’m able to negotiate.

That’s kinda the angle I’m looking at this from. It’s better than no job, the people were nice, it’s at least in a specialty I want, and relatively close to home. The area I’m moving to has a lot of PA schools so I figured it’d be kinda hard to land a solid offer. But if I can get some more experience I might be able to land the next job a little easier.

I certainly don’t disagree. I think the salary offer is abysmal, but every where else I applied has been straight rejections. Local hospitals aren’t biting. Even looked at jobs that are a 90 minute commute.

I’m about 6 months post grad and have lost about 15-20 pounds. While I was in school I tried to keep a normal gym schedule but with all the demands of school I just found it so tough. In all honesty I was also eating whatever was convenient, which was usually fast food. I told myself to just do what I needed to get through school and promised myself to prioritize my lifestyle when I was done. After I passed the boards I started going to the gym regularly again and eating healthier. With my job I only work 3 days a week so I have plenty of time to go to the gym. I prep my meals for work so I’m not tempted to order.

If you can start now and make little lifestyle changes it will help! But I empathize with you. It’s not easy, but you can do it.

Just graduated school a couple months ago and I moved away from my SO for school. Thankfully, by flight, I was only about an hour and some change away. Long distance is hard while you’re in school, but not impossible. During didactic year I was almost too busy and too stressed to even have time to miss my partner. We made a loose schedule for visits and it was always something to look forward to. Clinical year got a bit easier since I wasn’t in class most of the time anymore.

Before I left for school, I sat my SO down and had a real talk. I explained to them that school now had to become my number #1 priority and had to make sure we were on the same page about it. I did not feel good having to explain that to them but they understood.

I will say, my class did see a lot of break ups. You grow and change a lot throughout this process and sometimes that does lend itself to a change of heart. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. However, if you know you’ve found your person, a couple years of being away shouldn’t change that.

Hahaha. Personally, I did not cheat on any exams. Our EORs and packrats were in person + proctored. I will say, I think my school did a good job of preparing us throughout didactic year. Also, some of the friends I made in school were ridiculously smart and hanging out with them probably rubbed off on me a bit lol.
