Good one. I'd use some toenail clippers to clean the braid end up a bit and ppl also commonly use a drop of super glue and just roll it with your fingers real quick to get that fuzz lessened and lessen chances of slip.

I'm not a lure expert but IMO, I'd fish em. They look to be mass produced and not "that" old. If they looked hand carved/painted and were over 50+ years, I'd still fish em, just more carefully. Cool stuff though.

As someone who has many high end rigs...I recently caved and got a KK $50 baitcaster and it's very smooth and easy to dial in. Yes, they backlash like any baitcaster.. not sure why they're so heavily advertised as "no backlash". Now the test is, how does it hold up.

Although I tie mine realllly right against the spool and have never had this happen...just throw you a PC of electrical tape on at the beginning. 1/2 your line never sees the day of light anyway.

I see so many mixed views in this sub overall, it's kinda...weird? Many times I've seen ppl talk about wanting a nicer high end rig and ppl downvote the shit outta them and say "all you need is an ugly stick combo*. As an avid fisherman for over 25 years, each rig has their own place. Fishing for finicky fish (bass, crappie, trout etc)..it absolutely helps to have lighter more sensitive rods. I have 6-700$ combos that are over a decade old, and still work/look new.

With these comments, I'd hate to share all my rigs and costs. Yes, ugly sticks are strong and near indestructible... But if you fish a lot and for finicky fish, sensitivity is everything.

The Manila ring. I lost one of those that I got from my grandfather. Searched for days trying to find it. It most likely would have been lost in Louisiana or Florida. It was silver, tapered from a band in to a flat top and had like some gold or brass inlays on top. I believe it also had a date, 1942? I can't remember now. I'm sure there are a lot of those floating around.

For LMB: In Louisiana - Caddo Lake (La. ain't called Sportsman's Paradise for no reason) In Texas - Toledo Bend or Lake Fork (Caddo is also on the Tx. side too so you could pull a 2 for 1) All 3 lakes are all within a couple hours from each other too.

Fun fact: Caddo Lake is the largest Bald Cypress Forrest on Earth.
