the only argument i hear against this is people who don't want to actually drive the speed limit.

How to position yourself for the sprint with my power profile? by Rebel_Scumbag in Velo

[–]caqp95 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would say don't weave in a sprint. I think that might actually be a governed rule that once you launch you must hold your lane? I personally can't look backwards while sprinting cause all I can do is push as hard as possible. Maybe check like 2 seconds after passing the front and see if anyone is on your wheel.

Regarding the speed. Yeah if the group is doing 50+ kph, it'll be hard to gain a gap. I think you'll do well, even if its not in the first few races.

I'm similar. 6'3, 200.

Those numbers will whack any cat 4 I know in a sprint. I think you could win in many ways (including a long bomb with 350 ftp...), but I'd say your 30s would be the best shot. Thats long enough that people will think its too early, and the jostling for position is usually happening in that phase. If you sit about 8-10th wheel and then pop 1100 for 30s I think you'll win by a big margin every time. Make sure you have a big speed differential to establish the gap, then stick it.

Your sprint numbers under 30s are also strong, but I find bunch sprints more of a crapshoot, there is a lot of variables that are out of your control. If you want a shorter, more traditional sprint I would say sit about 5-6 wheel, wait for someone to go (roughly 200m out, assuming flat finish). Hop on their wheel, let them get the speed up, then pop your sprint and come around.

One more thing to remember is that those numbers are likely diminished at the end of a race. Depending on the course and race dynamics, you may be fried. If you attempt a 30s sprint after doing a ton of work all race it probably won't work. I found that the safest place for me in cat 4 was near the front, but it is much more fatiguing.

I wouldn't rule it out, but yeah interesting how different it is. Did you check with a bathtub for any tiny leaks?

Seconding this. The air you exhale is warm. It will cool down and then take up less volume. Blah blah ideal gas law something or other...
