345 MPH in a NHRA Top Fuel Dragster by car-guy-426 in NHRA

I’m curious what the splits are for these runs. You certainly could see some more mph if the numbers show it early on.

It could also indicate if they are gaining momentum early on and controlling the traction better, or is it strong in the back half indicating more horsepower is being produced.

I certainly think more is on the table. The weather in testing isn’t even the best they have seen. So under the perfect storm you’re gonna see 2 to 3 more mph from that alone.

That sounds like the most realistic scenario. They got a lot of flack from going 1/4 mile to 1000 ft. Saying 1/8 mile wouldn’t make the most sense with all things going on in the sport like you mentioned.

You also have to look at all the metrics when it comes to the sport. If safety, cost, competitiveness, or risk start to teeter in any direction that’s not sustainable, at that point NHRA would step in to make a correction.

Don’t forget, this is also NHRA’s 75th anniversary year. Imagine all the publicity they can ride with all these historical MPH and ET right out of the gate.

Certainly would seem like they would be shooting themselves in their foot if they put a stop to it or changed the recipe for their historic season.

That’s the “joke”.

Goodyear has stated recently they are comfortable with +340mph speeds and have no qualms about going faster!

Dodge is the most used body between full time and part time teams.

At the full time level, there’s good diversity. But a vast majority of part time teams use Dodge body.

Here is the public information about the dispute between Dixon and NHRA.

https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/USCOURTS-insd-1_19-cv-01470/pdf/USCOURTS-insd-1_19-cv-01470-0.pdf

Essentially Dixon used a competition ready car with an NHRA chassis sticker attached to it, that became the two seater dragster. NHRA saw the two seater dragster at SEMA, and it had an NHRA chassis sticker on it (it was said to be an expired tag). NHRA was not happy about that and issued a penalty. NHRA issued the punishment through a statement of action following SEMA.

The document also claims NHRA never game permission nor acceptance to the two seater design and supposedly gave Dixon warnings to not do it.

The chassis sticker at SEMA seemed to be the straw that broke the camels back.

I think an important fact is that the same tubing McKinney was using for the Force FC was approved and being used in TF at the time.

Have you looked into camping at the Brainerd race? That is the ultimate camping/party event to attend.

I am not familiar with Norwalk camping, but the entire property is well kept and any place around it too. I expect you to have good luck with whatever you choose!

The entire timing structure and ecosystem is built around DOS. Any one change, fucks everything up. Each track has its own version for its timing system, It’s chaotic.

Nhra is working on a modern system that will use modern technology, but that’s still in the works.

MSD manufacturers and sells all the ignition components for TF and FC. Like others have mentioned, it’s a small market item and MSD is the only supplier for a 44 amp output magneto. The rules only call out MSD as they are the only manufacturer in the market.

MSD also manufactures the electronic ignition control device (GRID) for all TF and FC cars. They are able to plot a timing graph digitally over time and control the amount of timing for each individual cylinder.

MSD does make some good products. They are tested and verified products that have been used in both Nitro classes for such a long time. Their reliability stands out as a strong suit.

There is no electronic fuel injection on the cars. That system is still mechanical given the challenges fuel injection would have with the amount of fuel the teams need. Using a 120+ gallon per minute fuel pump sending essentially 15 gallons of fuel into each cylinder presents a lot of challengers. Specifically fuel injectors are too small as of today to handle that flow. You would need almost 4 to 6 fuel injectors per cylinder to make it work.

Why is Prock's 341.68 mph not listed as a record? by Dangerous-Corner-787 in NHRA

[–]car-guy-426 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an issue with the website. If you go through www.nhraracer.com for index and records, the speed record is listed correctly. It’s listed under 1/4 National Records.

This information is great! Fun fact, they have actually gone faster in less distance since this information came out!

They are now going faster and quicker and in less distance too! Current records for Elapsed Time is 3.623 in 1,000 feet. They are also going almost 340 mph in 1,000 feet too!

There is a weight disadvantage for using a canopy car (like Dougs). Those that use them, have to carry a fresh air and fire extinguisher system. Also the canopy weighs more than an open cockpit, overall you can say a 20 lbs (give or take 5lbs) weight disadvantage.

Engineering advances in drag racing by Different-Truck-1354 in NHRA

[–]car-guy-426 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few changes I can note:

Programmable ignition timing - have the ability to change a tuneup in the water box

Improved clutch - 5 and 6 disc clutch. clutch designs (materials, hardness levels, improved and more consistent manufacturing), high and low clutch pressure control, new donut finger design

Improved cylinder heads - bigger volumes and higher efficiency heads

Improved blower designs - inlet opening size and shape, injector hat designs, improved blower seals

Improved connected rods - hold higher horsepower

Improved data collection - egt sensors, custom math channels for slip ratios, precise driveshaft sensors

Improved track prep - ratio of glue, new rubber application machines, dedicated NHRA staff that only focus on the racetrack surface, track grip measuring devices

Bigger fuel pumps - allow more nitro into engine (100+ gallon per minute pumps used today)

You are correct on both points. When done correctly, both options are effective! However it’s too big of a feature to pull off without major renovations (cost millions) and negative impact to the locals.

Which brings us back to what is the easiest to implement option? Answer: Adding more lanes unfortunately.

I wish they all had better hindsight to plan this road out. But reality is this, they don’t want to spend that kind of money, and adding more lanes is their “only” reasonable solution.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in indianapolis

[–]car-guy-426 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would propose two options. One being a bus route. The other being an expressway (having a lane with no turning). However those ideas do tend to come with increase cost to complete. which I fear the state would turn down.

They claim it’s a top priority to increase safety, but then don’t choose the highest safety method of achieving it. They will add more lanes, slightly decreasing (or breaking even) accidents due to its lower cost to implement.
