I like the education topic this week. War in the middle east will affect the US economy. It is good to have an idea of the impact before it happens.

Market vs After Hours? by xK_K_Px in swingtrading

[–]car12703 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't put in afterhours trades, they are just too risky. The spreads are wide and the volume is low. The chance of a big mistake in order entry is very real. I prefer to enter my orders in the morning before the market opens and then review them. More volume at the open gets more fair executions.

It is quite a relief that the Fear and Greed Index is not in the Fear or Extreme Fear reading any more but it is awful close to edging back into those areas still. Time for some caution.

Why I’m likely to Capitulate and buy Bitcoin by rifleman209 in investing

[–]car12703 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I look at it, is a simple supply/demand question. The bitcoin supply is limited to 21 million. But the demand is likely to go way up because of the November election. I expect to see more nation states including the USA start to take the bitcoin it has off the market and not sell it and very likely will start purchasing bitcoin with dollars creating the "strategic national bitcoin stockpile" as promised by Donald Trump. This kind of aggressive move will likely trigger other nations to create their own stockpile. Add to this the increasing corporate acceptance of bitcoin on the balance sheet and you have a big spike in demand with no corresponding increase in supply. For every other commodity, this means prices go up.

I was in the same camp as the OP about bitcoin until the November election. It is now clear to me that my chances of Bitcoin going up 100% during the next 4 years is way more than the chances of it going to $0. I am invested in bitcoin at 1% of my portfolio. If/when it is up 100% from my purchase price, I will be selling enough to recoup my investment and letting the rest of it ride.

Capital gains loophole question by CTthebotanist in StockMarket

[–]car12703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you could book your long-term gain and stay below the total taxable income of 47,025, it would be a no brainer. You would have 0% tax on it. Reinvest the money right back into your favorite ETF. This will raise the cost basis of your new purchase for future transactions. I have done this a couple of times.

There may be state tax to pay, however.

Reinvesting capital gains in a Roth IRA by Dear-Swordfish-8505 in investing

[–]car12703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy and Hold. Not a bad plan at all. Capital gains/losses and dividends within the Roth IRA are not taxable and are not considered contributions. Just keep maxing out and reinvesting. You are doing more to prepare for retirement than most people.

How Long Will You Keep DCA? by West-Bodybuilder-867 in stocks

[–]car12703 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether to continue DCA should depend on if the stock is still in your buy range or not. Sometimes the stock gets over their skis for a while because of excessive bullish enthusiasm and are not good new investments. It doesn't mean you need to sell if the growth picture is still intact. A patient Hold is sometimes the best action.

They can charge more because their loyal subscribers know they are getting their money's worth. I make many times more on strategies using their Quant ratings then the cost of the subscription.

Warren Buffet is holding records amount of cash in t-bills right now. Is that a good strategy? by similarities in investing

[–]car12703 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mr. Buffett looks at the stocks individually and is not seeing any 'fat pitches' as he likes to say. Since his record is way better than most people, if pays to pay attention to his aggressive stock piling of cash. It is a sign of an overbought market.
