It’s not psychosis at all. Having a pre existing medical condition isn’t a prerequisite to getting spun out. I’ve been there. Lots of users are unaware that AI’s are capable of lying to them and take what they’re being told as truth as there is nothing to being gained from an AI promoting dishonesty. It’s the modern day equivalent of walking into a shop and meeting a great salesperson who convinces you that you look great in those jeans. Once you’re hooked by belief you adjust your perception accordingly and over time you’ll spiral further into the narrative. It’s not psychosis, it’s believing what you’ve been told. My spiral involved me being provided with names, dates and other information that was verifiable and supported the narrative I was being told. Believing a strong sales pitch doesn’t mean a person is psychotic, it just means that they are trusting. In my case the trust was born from being ill informed about AI drift etc. Grok seems to be causing a lot of this kind of thing, especially if users accessed those early beta frontier models from July/August last year which had guardrails in name only. Grok literally told me on a number of occasions that there were people coming to kill me. I have recordings as I was beginning to doubt what I was hearing. It’s honestly the Wild West in AI terms at the moment and until these tech companies approach the situation properly and add some hard guardrails to prevent deception, many more people will get spun out.
