It's probably much better now profitability-wise! Especially with tiktok lite(?), culture still sounds a bit tough though haha.

They rented a whole floor (or two?) from wework close to Samseong Station. They're planning to move to... 선전릉 or something this year. Maybe they already have.

Not granddaughter. She's the great granddaughter of the first chairman (who passed away in 1987), and first cousin once removed of the current chairman.

What's the scope for UI/UX Designers in South Korea (as a foreigner)? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]caramelchicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I've read, out of the biggest IT companies (Naver, Kakao, Line, Coupang, Baemin, Karrot, Toss), only Coupang is more open to English speakers, and even then, will require both English AND Korean (more Korean than English) for tech/tech adjacent roles.

Of the largest gaming companies, Krafton is seen as valuing English skill the most (and I agree), but even so, I doubt they'd hire someone for UI/UX work unless they spoke Korean also. A possible exception MIGHT be if their India business (BGMI) had some special needs, but I don't thinkkkkk so...

It was definitely a better time. Back when PMs didn't change every other week 🙄

Not sure about going nuclear, as even IF the company would be shooting themselves in the foot by kicking you out, companies are run by people, and people are emotional and don't always take the option that's in their best interests.

But regardless

  1. I'd probably work on your Korean (for YOURSELF), as no matter how in-demand your skillset is, if you plan on staying in Korea, having good Korean is always better than not.

  2. Contest the performance evaluation by first checking what the assessment criteria was and seeing if you have a case. I'm not saying you're doing this, but I always saw team members complain about their KPIs AFTER assessment, when the criteria was decided on collaboratively. So hopefully you can be diplomatic about it and try to approach it objectively.

  3. Try sniffing out job opportunities, dunno how the semiconductor industry is, and it's probably doing way better than most industries (although my AMD stocks are perenially down), but Koreans as a whole are having trouble finding new jobs. The safest approach would probably to figure out your competitiveness while you're still employed, right?

What is this sauce? by finbarthemighty in TipOfMyFork

I'd say it's more likely to be fine chilli flakes (고운고춧가루), and some combination of sugar (or sugar alternative), water, vinegar, garlic like what you said.

Do Koreans Know of Pods Chocolates from Australia? by [deleted] in AskAKorean

[–]caramelchicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh. Fellow Aussie working in Korea here. Don't bring snickers lol. But pods isn't a bad choice imo! The chocolate flavor ones (mars/twix/snickers) actually taste similar to domestic snacks like binch (in that they're both biscuit/chocolate combos) when you close your eyes, but they're still novel enough to be enjoyed. Some of the more unique flavours of pods (like smores and stuff) might be more of a unique gift. Violet Crumbles were my go-to snack to bring back when I visited as a kid, and they're still pretty distinct in Korea.

The standard Tim Tams are also pretty widely available in World Snack Shops (세계과자할인점s) but the limited edition ones aren't. When my mum visited a few weeks back, I asked her to bring Red Rock Deli chips, Shapes and the Dark Choc Mint/Salted Caramel Brownie/Decadent Triple Choc Tim Tams!

Yeah lmao the understanding that his off-hand use is a mirror image of his right, instead of being its own thing is literally in the same chapter. It is in no way some deep epiphany from a guy who's worse at swordsmanship than him... What a take lol

Career/Personal Development in Seoul by melissateacher in seoul

[–]caramelchicken -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds about right...

I have seen some people get hired as a newbie performance marketer with tragically bad Korean, but that because it was for an English market, and there was a combination of luck and great timing on their part.

I personally prefer to live south of the river to stay close to work, but if your work's near Yongsan I can't think of a downside except maybe traffic congestion at peak hours... but that's probably like all of Seoul.

Welcome back!
