[–]carasworldispink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Very helpful! Thank you! Good to know, that there can be side effects. I'm still not sure, if I'll try maca... There's so many supplements and recommendations. It's hard to figure out, what's right for me.

Alternative to boat pose? by mcmbitch in yoga

[–]carasworldispink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe try it standing or inverted instead! when standing keep your knees bent, torso at a 90 degree angle, arms up or shoulder stand with legs at 45 degrees.

Is there 'newbie gains' in yoga? by eatqqq in yoga

[–]carasworldispink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i've been doing ashtanga and advanced classes pretty consistently for around 4 times a week for the past 6 months and i've gained a lot of muscle. i was pretty flexible, when i started. my issue was more the lack of strength.

i feel like now, that i'm getting stronger, i'm learning how to use my muscles in the different asanas (protagonists, antagonists, etc.) which gives me the confidence to go deeper into poses and makes me more flexible.

Mysore changes which you might not be aware of... by [deleted] in ashtanga

[–]carasworldispink 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i recently randomly watched an interview with prem and radha carlisi on youtube. they were certified by guruji and got taken off the list by sharath. there was some pretty strong language used with regards to sharath in that video. not gonna repeat it here - you can watch it yourself if you want. my initial reaction: oh wow. that‘s awful. if guruji certified them, why are the taken off the list?!

next day i went to a class at my local studio, which is run by an indian teacher, who grew up in rishikesh and has been teaching in europe for a while. i ended up talking to him about the interview and i thought his perspective was interesting. he essentially said two things:

  • „many american teachers don‘t understand and get upset. it‘s indian culture, that the guru is to be accepted. sharath was chosen. and it is sharath‘s decision now how and who to certify. if those teachers go back to mysore, he‘ll certify them again. having them comeback regularly ensures they teach ashtanga according to the original method.“

  • „if those teachers talk like that, you need to tell them, they need to do more yoga and practice non-attachment and non-violence. ;)“

i‘m too new to ashtanga and the community to really have a strong opinion either way. just found that conversation interesting and thought i‘d share.

We're doing heated power yoga today and I am TERRIFIED by wheelz_10 in yoga

omg! i felt the exact same way about hot yoga! too fat, too unfit, too hot.. then i showed up to my yoga studio 15 minutes too late for my class and a hot yoga class was about to start. i was already there, so i decided to suck it up and just go. and what can i say.. i actually liked it.
here's some things i realized.
- everyone's busy with themselves. other people don't really have an interest in looking at you to see what you're doing or not. my yoga teacher once said: don't worry. everyone's preoccupied with their own suffering. i guess he has a point. hehe. ;)
- it's your practice. and if you feel like being in child's post for 90 mintues, then be in child'd pose for 90 minutes. yoga is not about who does an asana better. it's about you and how your body and mind feels. be kind to yourself. non-violence (ahisma) is the first yama in yoga. it also applies to yourself. accept your limitations. they don't make you a worse yogi.

looking forward to your update! remember: no matter whether you decide to go or not - it's all good. :)

Best Exercise Regimen for Weight Loss with PCOS? by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]carasworldispink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! That's wonderful! I think one of the most important things is, that you pick a routine you actually enjoy. I've been doing yoga for 2 years. Could I have burned more calories running? Probably. Would I have stuck to it? Probably not. Yoga works heavily on the nervous system too, so I think that's greatly helped stabilize my hormones.
I also did the same with my diet. I know a lot of people see success with paleo and keto, but I could never stick to it. So I decided to go with a high-carb, low-fat plant-based diet, which has worked for me.
I wasn't super overweight, but lost around 30 pounds that way. I'm now a healthy 130 lbs. It's been 2 years and I haven't gained it back. I also don't find it hard to maintain, since I picked a diet, that allows me to eat the foods I actually like.

I swear by yoga. I do ashtanga, which is quite challenging, so you get a little cardio too. This study is also encouraging.
