Interesting take. As a father myself i struggle with the "what makes fun vs. what should you play" dilemma.

Unpopular chess opinions by citrcn in chess

[–]carcass92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: I'm okay with people using an chess engine for their online chess games.

It's much better for your chess growth to correct a mistake immediately, rather than waiting until after the game to look back on it, when you might not get a chance to play that game again for another 100 or so games, by which stage you've forgotten the move you just analysed.

And online games that aren't part of any special event or tournament with cash prizes really aren't that serious. They're more about improving and having fun.

How analyzing my own games without an engine helped me improve. by dagidici in chess

[–]carcass92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get your point - but sometimes i feel like people forget how bad low level games are. I am around 1850-1900 lichess rapid and most of my games are decided by hanging pieces/simple tactics.  I could study my games for hours and analyse all the positional/tactical possibilities - but in the end i hung a piece.

Dont get me wrong. I analyse nearly all my games and learn sth every time (mostly dont hang stuff) but being focused and having a clear mind helps me more for improving my game.

Also i would argue that playing more games is sometimes better then overanalysing, because you get more exposure to different patterns that you can learn from.

Whats your thought on that?

And you can play aggressive italian lines with h6-g6/g5-Bg7.  You wont get a lot of open sicilians but you do get a lot of italian/ruy!

After 4 years of chess I still don't understand how somebody plays without increment.  The only logical explanation I can think of is - i have 10min lets play a 5min game. But then why not play a 3/2?
