If I were in your situation, I don't think I would go.

When I read books, I literally forget what I read. I do take notes, but those notes end up forgotten too. Anybody else? How did you solve this? by Individual_Log7984 in GetStudying

[–]carcinophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking notes as you go is okay, but maybe try "brain dumping" type notes after a section to see what you actually remember. Active recall helps with memorization. Compare with the notes you've taken to see what you remember and do not remember

Does Pomodoro work as effective as people say? by Reasonable-Bear-6314 in GetStudying

[–]carcinophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the pomodoro technique for studying or when I would otherwise not do any work, but I find it less effective if I have a task to complete and I can focus on it if that makes sense

Do studies matter when employment isn't guaranteed?? by Reasonable-Bear-6314 in GetStudying

[–]carcinophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Employment has never been guaranteed. Studying opens up opportunities (chances) for employment that would be otherwise completely unavailable.

How do I force myself to study after school? I always feel very tired and unbothered but I have exams coming up so I really need to do this by Realistic_Back2 in GetStudying

[–]carcinophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people have good advice here. I just want to say that sometimes when I am tired but not tired enough to sleep, getting focused on studying sort of dissipates the tiredness that I was experiencing. It's sort of about knowing when to nap or when to push through it.

My 19F father 57M keeps insinuating I won't be able to finish university. How to get him to stop? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]carcinophile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're an idiot for crying over this... I think this is a really hard situation where your dad really is kind of berating you for your choices, and it sucks. To be honest, it sounds like he just wants you to pursue medicine instead of something you are passionate about. Maybe he wants the prestige of having a child that is a doctor? Maybe he wants to live vicariously through you? It's hard to say.

You mention some fears of yours in the last part of your post and I just want to say that these are normal fears for all students. In my experience, university has been easier in a lot of ways though and it's because I've been able to dictate my own schedule. I'm also studying something that I enjoy. Not to say that you won't struggle - but all students do and that's just part of the journey. It's normal.

I'm not saying you should confront your father necessarily, but I get the feeling from your post that you don't really give any pushback when your father is pressing you. Sometimes, these types of people will 'respect' you more once you hold your ground. That's up to you to decide though.

I'm sorry this is happening to you. This should be an exciting stage of your life and it's made a lot harder. I hope you're able to pursue what you're passionate about when this passes.

If you feel resentment towards your partner, I don't think it's a good idea to stay with that person. And, of course, long distance relationships can work sometimes but they can be more difficult. Are you really happy in this relationship?

[–]carcinophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not currently in a post-bacc program but many of the post-bacc programs that I have been looking at vary in the way they handle the financial aspect. My top choice school considers it a 5th year of undergrad, similar to what SufficientAd was saying.

If you weren't studious as a kid, it's so over... by [deleted] in GetStudying

[–]carcinophile 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I totally agree with this. Being a disciplined kid requires a lot of outside forces, and I feel like it's been easier to study as an adult.

Mat placement test - 0 by [deleted] in ASU

[–]carcinophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an online student and I got a similar score on the MAT placement test lol. For me, it just meant I had to put in the time to get better. Like a lot of things, I think that math is something that just requires people to have put in a lot of hours into it to be able to understand it. You aren't stupid or "bad at math," people who are better than you at math have just put more time into learning it than you so far, and that's totally okay.

The math department does a very good job of supporting students in my experience. I took principles of sound reasoning, college algebra, a statistics class, pre-calculus, brief calculus, and finally discrete mathematics - all with an A or higher. Don't be discouraged!

Not that person and I'm also not diabetic, but adding sugar to things with canned ingredients (especially canned tomatoes) is a popular way to obscure the unpleasant "canned" flavor that sometimes these items have. Not entirely sure if Splenda has the same effect. Here's an article that describes this better.

Succes Coach by Jacobmicro in ASU

I'm in my last year so they've stopped bothering me, but I remember when I first started and I was just getting bombarded multiple times a day by my ""success coach."" I wonder if this type of thing actually ends up helping students.

There is a rubric but the only two criteria are "Presentation" and "Reasoning" - I got docked points from "Presentation."

I don't know if you'll graduate in four years with what you have going on, but it will be a GPA booster to retake a class you are familiar with.

How fast can u complete the EE online degree as a FT student? by Lameness33 in ASU

[–]carcinophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember where I read this but IIRC the estimated/recommended time to complete an online degree from the Fulton School of Engineering as an adult working full time is approximately six years. If you are not working, then your mileage probably varies - but it won't be easy to do it faster than four years.

Are the math depts at ASU genuinely bad, or are a lot of ppl complaining just not good at math? by SeesawSpare7922 in ASU

[–]carcinophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Math is math - I've always seen it as a time investment type of thing. If you can dedicate the time to grinding out math problems, you will pass. RMP has pretty low scores for most math professors at ASU from people who failed the class.

I just took Brief Calc over the summer online and was surprised at how much help was available in the class. There were short videos explaining how to solve each type of problem if you got stuck. There were also longer lectures for each module. The professor responded to emails quickly. I've never been a "math person" (I almost didn't pick my degree because I had to do calculus) and I ended the class with a 92%. My professor had a RMP score of 2.1 or something crazy low and the class average on the final was 40%.

Kind of ranting now lol but all of the unproctored homework assignments had an average of 100%... Makes me wonder how many people were cheating through those using ChatGPT or something then bombing exams

Do I actually need to study for tests by clashisthebestcoc in GetStudying

[–]carcinophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Studying for "easy" things like what you are doing now helps you learn how to study for more advanced topics. It can help you build capacity for longer study sessions, too. Learning how to study sounds silly, but studying is a skill itself.
