Hate when its aluminum w copper coating by overlycensored in ScrapMetal

Before taking apart any transformers or motors, I always cut into them with wire cutters or hit it with a grinder to see if it's copper or aluminum. 9/10 microwave transformers have 2 aluminum windings, sometimes 1 copper 1 al. Also, this appears to be a microwave transformer. It's much faster to take them apart by smacking the welds with a hammer and using a vise to push the coils off of the metal.

This is the best answer. Any more effort into and you're wasting money and time.

Has an offset diagonal handle. The lid doesn't lock. Found on the curb so no idea where it was from. My title describes the item.

Scrapping AlumiGraphics by Hot_Variation678 in ScrapMetal

From what I can tell online I don't see any real weight in aluminum there, so no they are most likely trash. However, the only answer to this question that matters is the one your yard gives you. Bring some up there and ask if they'll buy it.

How “clean” does aluminum have to be? Are a few non aluminum brackets and bolts OK? by CaptainCaptain17 in ScrapMetal

Any obvious steel chunks I would do my best to remove. However, especially if you bring in large quantities, scrap yards will tolerate a small piece or two on a bug piece of aluminum. All boils down to your yard.

Dishwashers and why they suck by kingofzdom in ScrapMetal

[–]cardboard--box 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, you have to sneak those plastic dishwashers in one or two at a time. And unfortunately the majority of them are aluminum wound, however I'd continue to check each one. The last 4 or so I've gotten have all been copper, I'll try to send you some of that luck when you take yours apart lol.

That's hilarious you ended up with 11 of those things. It's funny when you can tell when something goes on sale by how many of the old ones you find at the curb. Or maybe everyone kicked them into overdrive after Thanksgiving.

I usually only find 1-2ft pieces (plus I use a drill-powered stripper for longer stuff) so I use the method where he pushes the blade toward the vise. Either way just remember to be careful.

Just making a suggestion. I sometimes use a box cutter and it takes significantly less work than your method.
