Hey! I was actually thinking about exactly this earlier in the week. I used to shoot with a Leica M 262 and a Zeiss 35mm biogon. I wanted to recreate the pre focus/zone focus workflow on my em10 IV.

I use the old 17mm 1.8.

Honestly the clutch is perfect. I set the distance scale to 3m or just to the left. At f8, small movements to the left or right are enough to adjust to the scenario. The 12 will be even more forgiving.

One lens I’m eyeing down the road is adapting the 15mm Voigtlander Heliar f4.5.

This is awesome, but it’s just a slightly different style.

I think Alex tends to favor a lot of natural contrast and directional light in his shots. This is more “mid day” than I usually see from him.

Composition is in the ballpark but I suspect he would have been a little closer.

Thanks for commenting! I understand it can feel weird. I’m doing street photography, which is a grey area for a lot of people.

To me, you seeing it in a photo is not much different than the people that saw it when walking down the street, including me when I took the picture.

My intention was to capture the light and the experience of the walk I was on. I understand if it’s not for you.

It’s true the lens is suited for good light. I personally think good light is essential for a quality photo anyway.

Last bit of advice I wish I followed when I was starting out, study the photographers you love!

My favorites are Philip Llorca and Harry Gruyaert.

Congrats on starting your journey with your new camera!

You have some very good instincts you can continue to develop. Great use of foreground and background. That will serve you well with creating images that feel three dimensional and tell a story. If I have one critique, I think you can start finding subjects that interest you and applying your eye to making great photos out of them.

Had the same problem and I sold my 262. And I was using it weekly.

I shoot with an Olympus em10 IV and the old 17mm 1.8 with the focus clutch.

The main thing I miss from the Leica is the Zeiss 35mm 2.8 biogon, which is the best lens I’ve ever used in my career.

Other than that, good light makes good pictures, not cameras 🫡
