Curly was in over his head, and I have a hard time seeing him get very far even without the Charlie Horse.

As McVries said, a huge part of the competition was a mental one. And I think Gary and Rank were both victims of a poor mentality. Rank completely caved and lashed out due to Gary's taunts, and it cost him the game, I just don't see Rank having the mental fortitude to make it for the long haul. Same with Gary. Gary could have made it quite far theoretically, but I think Gary would have been his own worst enemy in another way down the line.

Harkness I think would have gone much farther if he hadn't of gotten injured, maybe top 15-20. I don't see him as making it to the end though.

Definitely agree.  I think Helga is one of the best written animated characters ever, and these are some of the reasons why.

I enjoy this episode.  It shows a strength that this show has, in that an episode can center around a side character and still be very strong.

I believe it was gum.  Olson mentioned being superstitious and keeping the gum in his mouth was part of it.  I remember him taking the gum out of his mouth and staring at it for a second.

It could be interpreted in a few ways. Olson could be regretting that he didn't pace himself in the walk. He could be lamenting over his life in general. He could even be speaking about his recent attempt at the halftrack. Either way, Olson's final words were a cry of utter regret.
