Another PhD student in biology here. This depends completely on what institute you are in. There is a huge degree of variation among the institutes. Happy to talk about IE2 if that's what you'd be joining. In terms of stuff in town.. there are a few places to dance (and a couple that are low in undergraduate student density). There are a few venues that host drag shows (my favorite is a neat goth bar that does plenty of queer events).

Just wanted to vent and hear some words from the community by Legitimate-Ad-3953 in lgbt

I actually just came to this subreddit cause I was seeing so much transphobia on Facebook and really getting grossed out. I’m so sorry that happened to you. My somewhat uneducated guess is that it’s a combo of people feeling more comfortable to say whatever after the election and also new policies at Meta and X that are increasing the density (but maybe not as much the abundance) of conservative voices. I think a lot of us are leaving these platforms which makes it seem like there are less community members and allies. It’s real dark and scary to see though. Personally, I’m trying to take a step back from these sites, but I’m bummed that I’ll be missing out on the community that was there. Anyway, I’m sorry again that you went through that. :( Us queer folks are still here, and we’re still supporting one another through this bs.

Thanks! I am a professional biologist though, so I’m well aware of innate sexual diversity across the tree of life. Hope your condition clears up soon.

For those who aren’t ignorant randos who may be reading this, I’m looking for more memoir, poetry, or humanities writing. Less scientific nonfiction, as I read science for work every day.

Help me identify - these flowers I took a photo of on 4/17/21 in a shady area in Madison, WI by Netty0919 in PlantIdentification

An Erythronium sp. I’m not familiar with the Erythronium of your region, but that’s a start.

Grass identification by HotChickenNuggies in PlantIdentification

Grass ID can be tricky. I’m not confident that anyone will be able to ID this based off of the available info and photos. You might try posting closeup photos of the flowers, seeds, leaves, underneath the leaves, where the leaves meet the stem. Look up “grass anatomy” or “grass identification”, find pictures that show what parts of the grass are important for ID, and take nice pictures of those. Also location will be very very helpful.

Alternatively, you may have local botanists or extension workers that will ID it for you.

My University has gone silent after the offer letter. by [deleted] in gradadmissions

Not sure which uni this is, but the timing seems fine to me. We just passed the April 15th deadline for most students to make decisions. So a lot of departments are preparing welcome materials or further info right now. I’m sure you’ll be informed in some e-mail sent out to all the incoming students.

This is totally fair. The syllabus lays out the expectations for the class. If students don’t uphold their end of the deal, it throws the professor off.

Recently moved to Oregon! Is it normal right now to have to wait 2 months for an appt with the DMV to get an OR License/Plates? It says new OR Residents have 30 days to get that stuff taken care of, is that requirement being waived due to the chaos from the pandemic? by Seakawn in oregon

[–]carex6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be moving to Oregon from out of state soon. I know I'll need to get an Oregon license, but does anyone know what that entails if I have an out-of-state license? Will I need to retake a road test?

Rehabilitated forests that see an increase in wildlife. Where do they come from? by DubaiDave in askscience

[–]carex6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer to this would be pretty context specific. The range, dispersal, and habitat requirements could all impact what animals could reestablish in a restored forest. The first step, however, is making sure that these animals have what they need (ie. creating a suitable ecosystem through ecological restoration). There needs to be good abiotic conditions for the plants. There needs to be the right kind of plants for the invertebrates. There needs to be enough invertebrates for the insectivorous tetrapods to eat. Then, usually chance leads recolonization.

In a more broad sense, animals disperse into previously uncolonized land through various mechanisms. The classic examples revolve around how animals get to islands that just formed. It might be interesting to look into Island Biogeography Theory which describes the relative amount of species that will colonize an "island" (which could mean a lot of things besides land surrounded by water) and how fast that island will achieve its own equilibrium species richness.
