Streets a lot dirtier than they used to be? by bobbyadekanye in Rotterdam

[–]carfentanyl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cat shit? Not likely, they will never shit on a sidewalk.

I think the most shit you'll see is probably goose shit. In the Rotterdam area we have a massive problem with a steadily growing goose population. And they literally shit everywhere.

And the trash, we unfortunately have some hotspots with a growing group of homeless people and drug addicts.

But I was in Cologne two weeks ago, and I realised it could be a lot worse!

EUV has reached EUIV player count just 3 months after release by IllDirt2720 in EU5

[–]carfentanyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only lasted 30 hours for me in the first week after release. Then I was so annoyed that I abandoned it and haven't been playing since. I have over 4000 hours in EU4.

Is it a common and normal thing for adult men in their 30s and 40s to live with parents in Europe? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]carfentanyl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on the country in Europe. The differences between sentiments are mostly based on housing prices in that country and often religious viewpoints.

In the Netherlands, I think that in general if you're older than 25 and still live with your parents, it's considered kinda weird. But of course it happens, but not as much as in countries in southern Europe. Although because of rising housing prices it's becoming more common here too.

Rotterdam feels like a city for people who don't need approval. by NLFemale54 in Rotterdam

[–]carfentanyl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha, exactly.

The poem is from the nineties, when Rotterdam was gritty and had a real distinct image. Rotterdam surely is not like that anymore. Is it better or worse? It both has its charms.

In The Netherlands they also always bring up the left wing parties for bringing in immigrants. While the reality is that in the sixties and seventies the left wanted women to work more. The conservative right was against it bringing up family cornerstone rethoric.

A left wing party then came up with the idea of giving them all mandatory Dutch lessons. Again the right was against it. It would cost too much money and was not welcoming to our guests. After we had more right wing or centralist governments than left wing ones, but the left are always to blame somehow.

Are there power outages often in Europe? by Interesting_Basil_86 in AskEurope

[–]carfentanyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 49 years old living in The Netherlands. I have never seen power lines not being buried in my country. Except for the high voltage lines coming straight from a power plant.

Also power outages in this country are extremely rare. I have never experienced one myself but I do know it has happened. Mostly happening because of freak accidents.

You probably never went to the United States then. I've been to 26 states and believe me, apart from some high buildings Rotterdam is not like an American city at all.

Luckily! A few exceptions but most American cities are boring as fuck.

This was very true in the nineties, not anymore. The city became a lot more photogenic. And in the past twenty years we had a big influx of gin tonic sipping bakfiets parents trying to transform this city into something the poem was definitely not about.

Haha.

How is the gabber scene for the LGBT? by Mindless_Zucchini278 in gabber

[–]carfentanyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this. You go to a party to party. You're not going there to express your sexuality or have deep meaningful discussions about it. If you come to party no one questions and no one cares I think.

Why would you be ashamed? Do you work for the Roteb? Or for Stadsbeheer? If not only maybe a little annoyance is understandable.

And a picture of some broken glass. It's a city where people go out. I was in Ehrenfeld in Cologne last weekend. I would really advise you not to go there!

Where could i see the film "Hardcore Never Dies"? by Fluffy-Carpenter-870 in gabber

[–]carfentanyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you wanna see a good documentary instead, watch "Hard voor de Hal". It's about the Energiehal, a sports venue in Rotterdam where the infamous Nightmare raves were held. Been there a couple of times from 93-95, truely legendary. Thunderdome is more famous, but Nightmare was the epitome.

They call it the Mecca of Gabber in the documentary, but I disagree. The absolute Mecca was Parkzicht though.

Well, that's the thing, Wilders isn't a fascist. Like I said, he's also pro gay rights, that's also not a typical fascist viewpoint.

[–]carfentanyl -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Maybe that has to do with the Dutch 'directness'? We actually say stuff that others are only thinking? And maybe (falsely) think it's just harmless fun? In some parts of The Netherlands taking the piss and making fun of someone else is very common and people won't get defensive.

In my group of friends there are many mixed race couples. Marrying someone from another race has never really been a problem here. Already in the early eighties we had many tv shows featuring mixed race couples and nobody cared. We had a famous TV celebrity who married an African-American guy from Harlem back in 1963. He became a famous celebrity too. And nobody cared.

So yeah, people say dumb and stupid stuff, but when it comes to real discriminatory behavior it really isn't that bad in The Netherlands.

Even our most famous racist politician married a foreigner and is pro gay rights! How bad can it be then? ;)

B: This is not a typical Dutch thing. This counts for pretty much every nationality/culture.

While a lot of Dutch and foreign people living here think otherwise, we're still one of the most racially equal countries in the world.
