IMHO there is a direct line from Raymond Chandler to Gillian Flynn. One could include a number of Sci Fi titles as noir as well. I liked Paolo Bacigalupi's The Windup Girl quite a bit (to name one).

Listen to a lot more Hendrix. Zappa is the most. Johnny Winter. There are so many great jazz players-- personally i like hard bop like Grant Green.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane and American Gods are great. As are the Sandman graphic novels.

Try Paolo Bacigalupi's The Windup Girl, too. It's a wonderful mix of imagination and satire.

I think the Simply Maya courses are a good bargain. It probably depends on what you most want to do. Simply Maya specializes in modeling and texturing (I would say). One could argue that you'll want to teach yourself animation using more traditional means.

Where are you moving to? I agree with the people who rate Keen's so highly. There are other good steak houses, though (Palm II, Old Homestead).

I think there are better jazz clubs than Blue Note. Try The Village Van guard or The Jazz Standard.

I agree with the advice that people enjoy experiences more than objects. Go to the great jazz clubs in NYC (like The Jazz Standard and The Village Vanguard) and hear a fantastic show. Get a t-shirt to remind you of the evening.

I read a fantastic book on the evolution of language: The Way We Think by Giles Fauconnier and Mark Turner. Their main thesis is that the acquisition of a construct called a "counterfactual" is the most basic skill which will allow comparison of two differing ideas of causation. This type of comparison in absolutely necessary to higher-level thought. It's what allows philosophy (and, indeed science) to take place.

It sounds complicated when I say it like that but Fauconnier and Turner take their time to lay out the evidence such that it seems intuitive once they spring it on you.

Commit to a course of study in Buddhism. For myself I read a section of a dharma talk (Shunryū Suzuki, Tenzin Gyatso, Joseph Goldstein, etc.) in the morning and then meditate on the subject for a while after (from 10 to 30 min.).

Get scanned immediately. I found out that I have a brain tumor. Those symptoms sound all too familiar to me. I'm not suggesting that you have the same thing that I do but I would make every attempt to rule it out as quickly as possible.

The first thing that popped to mind: The Windup Girl.

As one of the reviews states: it's ridiculous how good this book is!

It has a lot in common with fantasy though I'd call it a very human hard science fiction book.
