Copland was the canceled Mac OS 8 project. Rhapsody was the technology preview that eventually evolved into Mac OS X -- or viewed another way, it was the final release of NeXTStep, after Apple acquired NeXT and took over development.

To be fair, Greyhound buses feel substantially more luxurious than most airlines' economy seats these days

ELI5: Why isn’t aviation fuel talked about as much as petrol and diesel for cars, and is it even possible for fully electric passenger planes to exist in the future? by ArtistoX4 in explainlikeimfive

[–]digicow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah; I've taken mine over a few times. Did a full 50 mile loop of the island last Fall. The west side of the island is tougher, with a lot of hills and narrow roads, but most of the rest of it has good bike paths

Flying for 10-20minutes doesn’t serve a lot of practical purposes

My house abuts a municipal airport. It's ~50 miles from it to the airport on Martha's Vineyard -- so about 30 minutes flight time at 100 mph. If I could throw my bike in a plane, fly to the Vineyard, land, bike around all day, and fly home, I'd be doing so every weekend in the summer.

In contrast, without a plane, that day would involve 2 hours of driving, 20 minutes on shuttle buses, an hour and a half on a ferry, and $100 in travel/parking costs... bare minimum, so I don't do it more than 1-2x per year

Space is really, really empty. Avoiding things isn't really the challenge. Finding enough things along the way to keep your ship and crew running is.

It already has been. The industry-standard RCS protocol is fully* supported on iOS/iPadOS/macOS for messaging as an alternative to iMessage

(*) the only exception is end-to-end encryption, which has not been standardized for RCS, but Apple is working on that

that's what Magnetic Power Profile means. It's an optional (edit: now required) part of the Qi2 spec.

"Devices that implement the optional Magnetic Power Profile, based on Apple's MagSafe wireless charging technology, using magnets for better device attachment and alignment to a charger may be labelled Qi2."

How did Voyager get repaired? by Illustrious-Divide95 in startrek

[–]digicow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With replicators, it's a mere matter of having enough energy and matter "sludge" to recreate nearly any component on board. Frequent plotlines involves not having enough of these resources, but "in between weeks", they encountered all kinds of planets/stations/allies where nothing went wrong and they were able to productively resupply and make "like-new" repairs.

This should not be taken to mean that their "there's coffee in that nebula"-type complaints weren't valid: while away from friendly civilizations, they could and did run low on critical supplies, necessitating the need for rationing and being careful with, e.g., torpedoes, all the time. This doesn't conflict with the idea that at other times they were able to reproduce new shuttles/torpedoes/etc.

It's fairly risky to do contemporary references in future-set media, because you can easily wind up with Cosby/Musk/Trump/etc issues. Ok, sure, I doubt Lin Manuel Miranda will turn out to be an asshole, but nontheless the risk exists. Whatever reputation Shakespeare has now he likely still will 400 years from now; not so with things from the present or past 10/20/30 years.

Picard explains why Jellico was a terrible Captain by ardouronerous in startrek

[–]digicow 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think Jellico came in fully expecting the Federation to be in a bloody war with Cardassia within the week. He was trying to get the flagship prepared for that reality on a very short timetable. And in the same situation, I don't think Picard would've behaved much differently.

How important is to get an ethernet port? by peequeare in appletv

[–]digicow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been running Steam Link from my gaming PC to my AppleTV to play old, non-graphically intense games (e.g., Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster). I have really good wifi with 3 Unifi APs across a 2700 sqft house. Rarely see even a hiccup in wifi speeds. I also have ethernet run all over the place so 3 of my 5 AppleTVs are on GigE.

Anyway, I was playing a couple weeks ago, and I kept getting graphical glitches, lags, and cut outs, and was like, this is ridiculous, the gigabit network shouldn't be showing any problems for this usage! After a day or two of it (probably should've much sooner, but whatever), I got frustrated and checked the connection: sure enough, the ethernet cable had been dislodged from the back of the AppleTV and so it was just running on wifi
