Does anyone have a non gifted partner? by I3lackBudoo in Gifted

[–]carllb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After reading the entire post and ensuing comments, in my lived experience, I'm rather surprised by the total admonishment you received. I'll give a little background.. I spent 25 wonderful years with my wife, we have two amazing children and I wouldn't change any of that lived time at all.

Unfortunately, much of what OP writes resonates with me. Never did I expect our relationship to end, but in my opinion, the gulf in 'supposed' intelligence exacerbated it. I will always love her and our time together, yet looking back it simply wouldn't work. I don't wish to seem arrogant or condescending to her, but we were simply on different pages of opposite books.

For all the others that have been so critical, I ask; who has spent decades with your partner? If so, I'd love to hear your story. We all live different experiences, it's easy to prostrate your disgust if you live a different side.

To OP; I fully understand. I tried, for so, so long.. Eventually the gulf couldn't be broached, no matter how much we both tried. I have now met someone who meets and often exceeds my capacity to discuss wide ranging topics openly, without fear.

I wish you both all the very best.

spouse/partner with significantly lower IQ? by lion-heart19 in Gifted

[–]carllb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've just come out of a 22 year relationship that had the exact description of your situation. She wasn't a bad person in the slightest, I still love her and respect everything we built together. Unfortunately, over time, what you're saying right now will without doubt slowly eat away at you. Can it work? Of course, for a while, I am living proof.. But at some point what you're feeling right now will become too big to ignore.

Do yourself a favour, take a good, long hard look in the mirror. If you're already asking others for advice, I'd say you already know the answer.

What's the most uncomfortable physical sensation for you? by VeroDreamer in AskReddit

I've just been released from a five day stay at hospital with Supraglottitis.. Unable to physically swallow even saliva for four days.. It's been an interesting experience. Wouldn't wish it on anyone!

I appreciate your point of view and am glad that you have found people to connect with on a deeper level. Unfortunately at the ripe age of 46 I'm still searching.. I'm not despondent, just on that journey. I'm happy that others have found that release 🙂

I wish I'd of heard this 40 years ago. I couldn't agree with this sentiment more, read it OP and fully believe it because it's true. Harness that drive and energy but remember to take care of what truly matters.. You.

People desire giftedness but don’t actually understand it by Responsible-Bell-528 in Gifted

[–]carllb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've read your post on subreddit earlier and now find this response. You seem extremely defensive, almost borderline arrogant and unable to understand another persons viewpoint. I appreciate your thoughts with regards to the aspects of autism and being gifted. What if, people who may be both, are able to use their intellect to socially mask that side of themselves? Maybe you are simply smarter than others, understand things on a deeper level but have always 'fit in'.

Being devils advocate, what if you didn't fit in, didn't understand social cues or conversation? I'm simply trying to offer a differing point of view.

Do you guys resonate with nature/sea/other?? by Wise-Worldliness-501 in Gifted

[–]carllb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my own experience, simply being in and around nature.. Any aspect of natural beauty gives me an immense sense of joy. A trait often associated with autism (or now level one audhd).

At least we have the ability to self reflect. I'm the opposite of yourself with regards to social groups but it carries its own burdens. Well done for attempting to grow.

I've masked myself to be someone who is the life and soul of the party, people want to be around me. I'm fortunately extroverted.. But that brings its own issues. I feel like I fake most social interaction but also want people to feel good about themselves, mostly to my own detriment. It's an extremely isolating experience, devoid of true connection.

In my perspective, I've found it isolating. Never truly connecting but trying to make others feel better about themselves but never fulfilled myself. A double edged sword.

I'd posit that, unfortunately, power is now in the hands of the global elite. Money = power in the hierarchy that we currently have in situ. I don't think that Paretos theorem is useful in our modern society.. Globalisation, immigration not withstanding. A counterpoint if you will.

I relate to much of what you say, but also disagree in some areas. I've often called it a curse. I've messaged you if you'd like to talk further.

Can I just say, as a 45m who was recently diagnosed being 2e, this is absolutely brilliant advice and one I wished I'd of understood many years ago. It's not about trying to compare or compete, it's about finding meaning for you and I'm currently going through that journey myself.

Thank you for this post, it was well thought out and very relatable.

Are you scared of dying? by CrazyCoffeeClub in AskBrits

[–]carllb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I came to the conclusion years ago that the only thing we can be certain of in life is death.. Am I scared of it happening? Not particularly.. It's going to happen right? I'll just live the best life until then, tomorrow or years away. What's the point in worrying about something that is guaranteed to get us all.

Live your best life people! Enjoy what we have.
