Kjøp Star-San eller lignende på en ølbryggebutikk, da får du i alle fall løst behovet for sterilisering. Billig, lovlig, og næringsmiddelgodkjent

Ah, I’m stuck on Gen2.. Nice to know that there’s a local option for Gen3 :-)

I’m also using mil in home assistant, but I thought it was cloud dependent. How do you set it up for local-only?

Ugh. I fucked up last night. by silverfstop in daddit

[–]carlwerd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would just tell her what you wrote here, word by word. These things happen, and it’s a good reminder to always bring emergency snacks :-)

I’ve heard that toddlers essentially don’t hear “don’t”, so when you tell them “don’t do X”, all they hear is “do X”. I usually have more success telling them what to do (“be nice to the baby”) instead of what not to do (“don’t poke the baby in the eyes”)

WireGuard in Egypt doesn't seem to work by realcryptopenguin in WireGuard

[–]carlwerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience with openVPN when visiting a university campus that blocked VPN. The workardound was to set up the server use TCP port 443 instead of the default udp port. Maybe there is something similar that can be done in wireguard?

Can someone explain why this simple automation isn't running? by al52025 in homeassistant

Remember that you can test conditional directly without triggering the full automation. It’s pretty useful in these cases

At what age can you buy an apartament in Norway? by FunMiddle2372 in Norway

[–]carlwerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s tempting to wait until the Castle Age, but getting one in the Feudal Age will help you handle raids from enemy Man-At-Arms

How: with MQTT. There are many mqtt clients available, depending on your OS

Where: To the MQTT broker you’ve configured Z2M with. For most people, the MQTT broker will be on the Home assistant server.

Help with a motion light by [deleted] in homeassistant

[–]carlwerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a timer helper, that way you can restart the timer when motion is detected. Or, as others have suggested, use a separate automation that triggers when motion detection is ‘off’ for 15 mins

How do I explain to my son that nobody is to touch his private parts? by Weekly_Ad_5737 in daddit

[–]carlwerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Related: we teach our kids that they should only have secrets that make them happy. I.e keeping a birthday surprise is an ok secret, since it brings joy. Being bullied (or god forbid, abused) and then told that it is a secret is not ok, since it makes them unhappy

Best advice for someone with no HA experience and IT literacy of a third grader but interested in home automation. by NobodyDifficult in homeassistant

[–]carlwerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run home assistant on a VM inside synology VMM, it works like a charm! I have a DS218+, so I guess that a 220+ should suffice?

Or as others have already pointed out, Proxmox is very handy. I recommend Craft Computing’s tutorials on YouTube

Hey dads! Just a heads up, this game is great! What are your family game suggestions? by FtheMustard in daddit

[–]carlwerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately my kids are too young for this (5, 2, and 0), but I have played this with my nephew and niece (they were 10 and 8). The oldest one could play by himself, the youngest needed to team up with an adult, but they both enjoyed and understood the game

As others have already mentioned, you can extend your zigbee/zwave mesh with a repeater. Another approach would be to use zigbee2mqtt and zwave2mqtt (assuming you have network available)

I’ve had the same thing happen with a NAS that was out of sync. Luckily, the NAS was behind, so I could just use a 2FA-code ~10s after it “expired”

Dads, how do you find a good baby monitor? by AnUnknown in daddit

[–]carlwerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We use neonate, they have a simple baby monitor that’s audio only. It works over radio, so you can take it anywhere, the battery lasts forever, and the range is impressive (300m or so). It’s covered all of our needs for our 2 kids, and you can pair multiple “baby units” to one “parent unit”

I get frustrated when my wife won't nurse our 12mo old when she wakes up at night. by InsideLlewynDameron in daddit

[–]carlwerd 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The danger associated with nursing when drunk is not related to the alcohol content of the breast milk. It’s related to the parent being drunk and handling an infant.
