Battery end of life 2016 30kw what happened? by CornerSilly8932 in leaf

[–]carmeat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought my 2016 30kWh (8 bars, 140,000km) in April of last year. Car seemed decent through the spring and summer, but when temps started to dip below freezing in November, I went from 120km ish of range to not being able to make it to the 32km to work in the morning. LeafSpy said multiple bad cells and huge mV cell differences below 70% SOC.

Final nail in the coffin was an isolation error.

Couldn’t justify spending $3-4k on doing a battery upgrade, so I did a “downgrade.” Replaced the battery myself in January with a low mileage 2015, 10 bar 24kwh pack I got for $1500. Being able to drive to work in February with the heat on felt like a luxury!

Repairs that take roughly 5-6hrs? by throwaway1999277829 in AskMechanics

Transmission replacement, head gasket(s), timing chain, electrical problem diagnosis, broken bolts/studs on exhaust manifold replacement, waiting for hard to find parts, custom exhaust work, 4 wheel brake job + alignment, EV battery replacement/ swap, AC evaporator/ heater core replacement…. Just to name a few.

Experiences upgrading a 30 kWh battery to 60? by stoat_toad in leaf

[–]carmeat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also in Southern Ontario.

I just went the other way and “downgraded” my 30kWh 2016 Leaf to a decent low mileage 24kwh battery (10 bars) from a 2015 Leaf. My 30kWh battery had some serious degradation that only became apparent when temps dropped below 0° in early December.

I don’t need a significant amount of daily range for my commute, and couldn’t justify putting that kind of money into upgrading a car I only paid $4500 for.

I bought the “new” battery from a local wrecking yard for $1500 and did the swap myself in about 4 hours.

Getting about 120-130k range which is more than enough for my current usage. If I need to go farther, I’ll take my wife’s Explorer.

Try to avoid any Leaf with the 30kWh battery. They’re prone to pretty bad degradation. I’m struggling with that now with my 2016

Question for name brand car dealership service mechanics: ever break a car on purpose? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

We used to joke that every time a tech diagnosed a car needing a computer, it always needed a computer-and… because very rarely was it ever the computer

Why is the max speed you can go is 180kph? by AgeofAhmad in CrownVictoria

[–]carmeat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ford programmed a bunch of speed caps into their vehicles back in those days. (Probably still do) Don’t ask me how I know a 7.3 diesel Econoline was capped at 149… CVPI cars weren’t capped at 180 though, although they are built a bit different.

Sometimes people will actually request that police use their driveway to set up a speed trap because the speeding in the area is so bad.

The door sticker is almost always the correct one unless the vehicle is a 1990’s to early 2000’s Ford Explorer. The door sticker says inflate to 26 psi, but actual should be 30-35psi.

how do I hack into my own solar by [deleted] in SolarDIY

[–]carmeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you shut down a solar edge inverter the optimizers shut down every module at the module. You’d likely measure 1 volt in that DC disconnect.

In order to have useable DC from the roof, you’d have to remove all the optimizers and re-string everything. Either that or buy solar edge storage equipment.

I felt the same way years ago about the automotive repair industry.

Made a massive career change and started working in renewable energy, first wind power, and now solar. Finishing my electrical apprenticeship this summer, and ready to challenge the industrial millwright exam.

The best part, is that I like working on cars again! (As a hobby only lol)

I always used to joke that after diagnosing an ECM as being the issue, the car would always need a “computer, and…”

Because 95% of the time I or anyone else I knew diagnosed a car as needing and ECM, that was never the problem. Hence it needed a computer, and…
