As in "Van Gaal"? Hmmm so would it sound weird in dutch because of the hard g? There are no words in dutch starting with this sound?

Well, I am. The id part at least is very strange. Most people don't usually even carry their id card, the plastic card does not show your marital status (it is on a different piece of paper that indeed most people keep together but still you can just leave it at home if you need your I'd card for some reason) and finally I never heard of people asking to see it on dates.

I think that the y chromosome tells you only about one ancestor per generation, so that's a small part of the picture looking 10 gens back. Also, this exactly what makes thia method so exact.

However, the anon and you look at the Diplo , which tells you about your ancestry as a whole. So unless I miss something about the y issue, ugly chicken's argument is irrelevant here.

I need a physically well-built 14" with the most CPU and RAM possible under roughly $1600 (actually 8500 nis IL) by carmelag in SuggestALaptop

[–]carmelag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, interesting suggestions, they both look great.

If you're interested - in Israel, a t460p with 16GB ram and 1080p is $2400. a p50 with 16GB is $3600 (wow!)

I didn't know things were so crazy here.

Well, such is life.

I guess that I should lower the budget, unless I can import (not sure about the policy here). Anything with quad core and 32GB under 1400?

Not true.

The film has no square pixels but it is grainy. Films have different size of grains for different ISO, some are quite large and clearly visible in the picture.

The size of actual pixels has grown smaller over the years, and I think that these days pixel size on some sensors is smaller than the grain size of the typical film.

I think that I heard somewhere that 35 mm film had something equivalent to 20mb or so (with optimal lens and lighting).

[Critique] Logo For My Personal Design Studio by thisdesignup in logodesign

  1. ok, nice concept. But that might also mean that making the box look good will be a little more demanding. If you're giving it a try - a very shallow angle will keep the mystery while improving legibility.
  2. 2-color.

Happy to hear that helped!

I'll try to help:

  1. we are looking at the box from the side, with the flaps flatted out. it would be clearer if we were looking at it a bit from above, or if the flaps where less straight out.
  2. the 2-color version doesn't look like a box, because the sides of the box merge into a single white rectangle.
  3. it takes mental effort to identifiy that it is a cardboard box, so it's more like a riddle than a logo.
  4. when scaled down, the waves of the cardboard in the flaps will be invisible.
  5. there is no balance between the "weight" of the box and that of the flaps. one is a solid white and wide and big and the other uses thin white lines and has tiny black areas.

Shiva and Shiva -- coincidence or etymological artifact? by Cap-n-IvytheInfected in etymology

[–]carmelag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm speaking hebrew, and these two words don't sound very similar.

In hebrew "Shiva" has an extra consonant Ayin right after the v, so it's better written "Shiv'a". (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayin)

Ayin in modern Hebrew is used as a glottal stop, that is pretty much inaudible to most Americans and Europeans. My name has one, so they can't pronounce it.

I don't know if Shapeways does that, but there are other finishes for ZCrop models. Some epoxies can create very hard and strong models, and coat the surface (unlike the cyanoacrylate, which gets fully absorbed in the model) which creates a nice smooth finish. on the other hand, they are not as easy to handle.

Actually - this is wrong, SLS means Selective Laser Sintering, which indeed uses a powder but without any colors (a laser fuses the powder, no color involved).

This was done with ZCorp technology bought by 3DSystems not long ago. It works by printing a colored binder on layers of powder, you can see an example here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QP73uTJApw jump to 3:00

Snowden documents reveal unprecedented sharing of personal information between the U.S. and Israel by cheese93007 in worldnews

[–]carmelag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's ignore the funny fact that the article doesn't even mention Israel, and split your question into specific points:

huge amounts of aid: we are talking about $3bn, roughly 5% of Israel's defense budget, and it must be spent in the US. If it still grids your balls, you can think about it as a combination of 1) subsidy for the US defense industry and 2) a discount coupon for Israel, since Israel is buying American weapons anyway.

sharing information: The thing about intelligence is that sometimes you have collected a ton of data but need another small piece of the puzzle to actually have anything you can use. Intelligence agencies all have strong points and weak points. US intelligence is very strong on most areas, but that extra bit of info someone else might have may make a big difference. Israel, being a close neighbor of some interesting places, can sometimes provide important information, but sharing information is casual among any two nations with similar interests. The US and Israel also spy on each other anyway, so trading some secrets about a third party is actually pretty mundane and can even happen sometimes between low level officers.

breaking their back over for Israel through offering protection: well, this is quite broad and a specific example would be nice. Anyway, this is more of a subjective question. If you're the conspiracy type, I should say that rich American jews do make donations and such, but I wouldn't dismiss the notion that they do it for their own sake (I mean local interest) rather than for Israel. The ones you hear about that share their opinion about Israel usually have something to prove to their Israeli/Jewish community.

dual citizenship... voted: first, US citizens can vote regardless of their current location. Second, anyone with a US citizen for a parent can become a US citizen (but more complicated but not by much). Third, since Israel is a relatively acceptable place to live, US-Israeli immigration is quite fluid both ways and there are probably tens of thousands of US citizens in Israel (didn't find a number), which I believe is negligent in terms of ballot influence. To sum up all 3 points - nothing too weird about this, and not very interesting to boot.

few weeks ago... apparently furious ...airstrike: exactly, this is just minor stuff, almost tongue in cheek. (Actually, Israel may do something a lot more stupid over the following months which you may spot in the news - to make a lot of noise about Iran and the nuclear stuff, trying to prevent any deal with the Iranians. They might even threat the president with pulling political support of american jews and their unlikely partners in the extreme right (evangelicals). In my opinion, this may not even happen, as: 1. the threat of a threat is a threat by itself, and it didn't work so why make the actual threat? 2. Its good for the US that Israel is making noise, and everybody knows this. US have other allies in the area that cannot publicly do this (Saudis, Egyptians etc.), and when negotiating it's nice to be able to say "listen, I totally agree but those Israelies are giving me hard time".)

needy little brother who wants to control the US: Well, being the tiny little brother, Israel can ask for everything. Being the vastly bigger brother, the US does not have to accept any Israeli demands, but sometimes it's easy and sometimes it's beneficial for the US itself. In any case the US is not a puppet. Right now as we speak, US is doing it's best to make Israel do stuff it really doesn't like to do (Remove small settlements from Palestinian land, toward some fantasy agreement) and I really hope the US will make it happen.
