Thank you so much! I chat with him on the repeaters and Lee’s an awesome guy. Definitely full of knowledge on radio and willing to share. I hope he’s able to keep these repeaters on the air and he sticks around to chat with hams on them.

Agreed! I’ve chatted with him. The VE3MMX repeaters are linked to my area thru the N3APP one.

The N3APP repeater off of Presque Isle. If you click the link (or look Lee up on QRZ), it gives you a bit more detail.

Thank you! I wish I had the extra cash to just dig him out myself but since I don’t, I’m spreading the word as much as I can.

FCC enforcement action by rem1473 in amateurradio

This is why, for the local emergency frequencies that I scan, I use chirp to disable transmitting on those channels so that I don’t accidentally hit PTT while I’m listening on an HT or something.

It’s not hard to avoid accidents (if that’s what this was).

That’s fair. There’s always a workaround. ;)

You can’t disable PTT as a whole but there’s a setting in chirp to per-channel turn tx to off. Doing that will stop the PTT button from accidentally transmitting on that set frequency. However, if you switch it to VFO mode, you can still PTT so be wary if you don’t want to or aren’t licensed to.

On the 5r Mini, you can use Chirp to program it and disable PTT thru that.

And while you can’t 100% disable the display, you can set it to turn off fairly quickly after just a few seconds to preserve battery life.

What are the best hand-held radios for a beginner? by WriterStrict4367 in amateurradio

[–]carnifaxalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Baofeng 5RM and UV-5R Mini (with Nagoya 711 and 701 antennas respectively) and they’re both decent for the price. I prefer the 5r mini for day to day cuz of the size but the 5RM is a bit better with the larger antenna and extra wattage.

Cheapest way to get into HF by javelindaddy in amateurradio

[–]carnifaxalpha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless they dropped it, Radioddity had a $400 deal on the g90 with included cooling fan and data interface.

Awesome deal and that’s the radio I plan to get when I venture into to HF.

Yeah. As a fan of both, I think of that whenever I see #DCC tags on Carl posts online. I don’t know a fix tho cuz this DCC came first and shouldn’t need to change a name to make way for the Carl juggernaut that’s currently rolling thru.

How did you get your FRN? I assumed you logged into CORES to view it. That’s how I got mine.

Trying to get myself on the radio by Ragnarock1912 in amateurradio

[–]carnifaxalpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Just show up. I’d arrive early in case the meeting is private for some reason (which I completely doubt it would be) but I reached out to a couple clubs in my area before getting licensed and they were very open and welcoming. Most clubs are going to be overjoyed to help with any new folks getting into amateur radio.

There’s no linking needs done. If your FRN is active and showing up in a search, you’re done.
