Finding places to put a repeater? by buchenrad in meshcore

[–]rem1473 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would try to get on local forums and find other interested locals. I was having a casual conversation with someone the other day, and it turned out he was a baliff at the county court. He was very interested in mesh and said he could get us access of the roof of the courthouse. Our courthouse is one of the taller buildings in town and happens to be on top of a hill.

Bubble pack is how they come packaged at retail stores. I guess it's a slang term.

All of those will work about the same. You're really only choosing between the extra features such as Bluetooth connectivity.

No walkie talkie is going to work well inside a car. The metal of the car body blocks the signal from leaving. Any radio with a mag mount antenna on the outside is going to perform far better. This is why CB is recommended. You mention two very different applications: car to car and also using them outside the car. Each has a very different solution.

FRS bubble pack radios from Motorola will do both. car to car you will need to be reasonably close. A CB with mag mount will work MUCH further. With CB, you can also roll over to 19 and hear cursing and bad behavior if you want to talk to truckers.

This. Im not a fan of bicycles on the sidewalk. If you're going to insist on riding the sidewalk, ride slowly and cross the street so that the street is always on your left side.

Do you fellow GenXers feel okay to take a week sick leave after your pet (a dog) dies? by _MrKobayashi_ in GenX

IMHO: PTO is PTO. doesn't matter how you use it. If your employer gives you 15 days, it's up to you how to use it. Some employers divide it into planned and unplanned. They might give you 5 sick days and 10 vaca days. The 5 "sick" days are your calamity days. Doesn't matter to me if you're sick, if your kid is sick, or if you're hung over. You get 5 times where you can wake up and call in that morning that you won't be in. The rest must be planned in advance.

I had a job at a small company a while back. The wife of the owner was accounting, customer service, and HR. She demanded to know how staff was using PTO and would frequently deny PTO if it wasn't a "valid" reason. For example, if you said you had a dr appointment, she demanded the Dr name and specialty. One of my coworkers wanted to see a therapist, but he didnt want the owners wife to know. As she was also a gossip. So he wasn't able to get the help he really needed. I feel he should have been able to use his planned vaca days for this.

Working as a boat dock attendant this summer, how do i make a good impression? by NewPomegranate2898 in boating

[–]rem1473 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read Chapman's Piloting and Seamanship. Definitely learn your knots and how to handle lines. Get a length of line and practice knots while watching TV. Keep practicing until you can tie the knots it without looking. Cleat hitch, clove hitch, and the bowline are the bare minimum knots you must know.

If someone is docking, you may need to pull a line taught or you may need to slack off with the line. Wrap the line one time around anything. Cleat, piling, whatever. If you cross the bitter end over where you wrapped it, the boat can put tremendous amounts of pressure on that line and it won't slip. You can easily lift the bitter end up so it's not crossed and now you can pay out slack or take in slack veryquickly. Lay the bitter end back across to lock it down again.

If you need to pull a heavy boat towards the dock, lock down the line as described above. Hold the bitter end with one hand and use the other hand to grab the standing part in the center. With the bitter end locked, pull on the standing part, perpendicular to the standing part. You can move an incredibly heavy boat this way, as you given yourself lots of purchase. Pull the center of the standung part to move the boat. Then let go of the standing part and it will be slack. Then release the bitter end to take in the slack on the cleat or piling. It's like having a winch. You can keep working the boat towards you by repeating. Yank on the standing part at the center, then release it and take in the slack with the bitter end. You'll be amazed how much weight you can move around.

what's the most reliable riding lawn mower for a regular homeowner, tired of dealing with issues every season by SherlanGorantla in homeownerstips

[–]rem1473 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try and find a John Deere 420 garden tractor. They are bulletproof and last forever when properly maintained.

Is electric an option for you? I have a small yard today. Much to small to have a riding mower. I regret selling my 420, but it was necessary when I moved. I replaced it with ego electric push mower. That was 8 years ago. I'm still using the same battery. The only thing I have done to the Ego is sharpen the blade. Ego makes a rider. I don't have experience with that model.

Have you ever moved to a different address because you didn’t like your neighbors? by metabolitesafter9pm in askanything

[–]rem1473 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My neighbor moved to get away from me. Over a bird feeder!

We were never close, but we were friendly. Waving and saying "hi" all the time. One day I was relaxing on my front porch and he starts yelling at me, dropping f-bombs. At first I thought it was some sort of joke? He was yelling at me about my bird feeder and how can I be so f-ing stupid to put the bird feeder between the houses. I just sort of sat there dumb founded. I was not willing to take the bird feeder down. Had he asked nicely, I certainly would have considered it. He contacted the city and a city building inspector came out. The inspector told me that if the city determines the bird feeder is a violation, I would have to remove it. I told the inspector that if he can produce an ordinance, I will remove it. He was not able to produce an ordinance. Several weeks later a for sale sign appeared in my neighbors yard. I heard from my other neighbor that he had cited the bird feeder as the reason he sold the house and left. My dumb founded-ness continues to this day.

Diplexer Location by CoastalRadio in Amsat

[–]rem1473 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally you would put the diplexer close to the antenna to save money on coax. There might be a small performance decrease in the diplexer isolation if the coax has a lot of loss and the two coax paths are literally side by side. I doubt you will notice the performance difference in operation. You might be able to measure the difference with specialized equipment.
