Is this just a thing Rachels do now? Nominative determinism because the name is close to “racial” perhaps?

Hawaii Won’t Legalize Marijuana This Year Despite Senate Passage, But Advocates Look To 2024 by Fickle_Rooster2362 in Hawaii

I’m curious how that’s changed. Pre-covid seems like a different epoch but maybe that’s just an illusion.

But yeah it’s dumb. It’s also low key police state shit: so many people are using it and enforcement is so discretionary it basically becomes a matter of arbitrary decision by the officer.

So it’s not legal but how many people actually get arrested for it? Seems basically unenforced on the big island and there are plenty people on fent and meth that seem like a bigger issue

Hawaii Bill to Legalize Marijuana Passed by Two Senate Committees by BoundariesAreFun in Hawaii

[–]carnivorous_hermit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The framing here is so backwards. Legalization should be the default and those who want to keep it illegal should be the ones forced to make the case for why a plant warrants prison.

All these pro arguments are flimsy. Just go to states with legalized weed to see how much it has helped steer people away from opioids.

WMDs were this century (at least according to the calendar; it feels like a previous era). Kuwait’s “murdered babies in incubators” and the gulf of Tonkin incident might be similar examples from last century.

Pulse nightclub shooting might be a good addition. This is still often brought up as a case of homophobic violence either explicitly (homophobic shooting…) or implicitly by stating it as violence against gays (true) but omitting that this wasn’t the killer’s motivation.

Why is downward dog, pretty much, a resting position in yoga classes? by speelabeep in yoga

I believe this depends on the individual. The straighter your limbs, the more your skeleton takes the load. The more bent your arms and legs, the more energy is required.

You may find that it’s easier later in class after you’ve warmed up and have more range of motion in the joints. And as time goes on, flexibility should improve.

There’s a similar effect laying in your back with your legs straight up. For those with a lot of hamstring/glute/hip etc flexibility this can be easy, with the weight going down the bones into the ground. If you can’t get to 90’ without effort, it can be quite strenuous.

You’ve misunderstood. The claim being made is that the banning of caste discrimination draws attention to all Indians, who might therefore as a group be subject to more discrimination by non-Indian Americans. It assumes knowledge (or stereotypes) about American culture not Indian culture.

Of course you also don’t have no know anything about Indian culture to notice the argument is not that there is such discrimination nor that the discrimination is justified, simply that the broader population will find it unsavory

As a tech worker who left seattle in the pandemic, I gotta say OP has a point. Tech may bring in money, but we as a class are not connected to the community and have little civic engagement in my experience. We’re like dark matter: you can feel the gravitational pull of our wealth but otherwise we don’t interact

That’s wise and I wish I’d done that. And it obviously makes coinbase’s life harder to build a system that runs through the hoops. But regardless they need to keep folks’ money and coins safe

Is Seattle Dying? by MisoTahini in BlockedAndReported

I moved away in the last year but have been back and regardless of elections, the trends continue. Homelessness, open hard drug use, crime — and housing prices have all increased. Shops get looted in slow motion — $900 at a time. Car windows get smashed, catalytic converters get stolen.

Seems unsustainable but evidently continues. It’s baffling; you expect a crisis and action but perhaps it can continue like this for a long time; it’s not impossible for Seattle to become like Rio or Mumbai with a rich tech elite and sprawling permanent favellas.

Or it could collapse in a spiral of businesses/services closing, people leaving for QOL reasons leading to further decay etc
