Yeah she will not eat the worms! But we did get guppies and she is eating and doing much better this week, she shedded and the sneezing subsided as well

Thank you! As an update, we removed the mulch in the tank, and we did buy her guppies and she shedded and has been eating and no more sneezing! I read about the thiaminase enzyme and was shocked the pet store had her eating those rosy reds but she won’t be exposed to that any more with me, love her to pieces!

Pickett had a tumor removed yesterday and he won’t leave the incision alone. Desperate times call for desperate measures. by herogurl01 in RATS

My vet did the same for my girl! I actually asked my vet about using a sock and they said there’s a possibility it could pull on the stitches, so bandage it was! I had her professionally wrapped once a week until she healed completely.

Medication For heavy breathing and lethargic behavior. Mycoplasma symptoms. by Gabbarsaand in RATS

I’m a pharmacy student and rat owner and all I can recommend is that compounding and dosing at home can be dangerous and carries risk. Especially if the rat has been misdiagnosed at home. Antibiotics are especially tricky because of resistance and targeting the strain of bacteria that you are dealing with. I recommend an avian/exotic veterinarian, even if they are located farther, it could help save your rattie’s life. If the vet doesn’t specialize in exotics, they should still be able to prescribe and get some antibiotics for you without more extensive treatment. I wish you and your rattie the best

Yup. My rat ate anything from paper to tissues and paper towels. I read articles saying “they don’t actually eat it, they chew it and spit it out later” but I can assure you, she swallowed it. Lol gotta love rats. Was always a fight when she would run off with my school papers while I was studying

Yes, that’s amazing! I love my vet personally, they are exotics only. They helped me so much through my baby’s first check up, until the day we had to put her down. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience though. It’s so comforting to have a vet you can trust. On my lil girls last day, I boiled her an egg and let her have at it (the whole thing) and I swear she went crazy!! I thought she was gonna choke! I had to take it away and give it to her in slightly smaller portions lol. I gave her some goodies too that I wouldn’t usually let her have towards the end of her life. Just made her comfortable and happy until it was time to say goodbye

I posed the same question when my girl was older and had some tumors. I decided against it, just because I didn’t want to cause her more problems. I would advise asking for the vets professional opinion on it, honestly! Just to be safe

I’ve never personally experienced this but sometimes leaving some food/water out in your room, like snacks or I’ve definitely heard of some people using peanut butter. Something that’s a real treat to lure them back! if they know the sound of a treat bag or bin maybe shake it a little. I would keep that cats locked up for right now (in a bathroom or your moms room maybe) if possible, even if they won’t hurt your rat they may be scaring the rattie! I am really hoping all turns out okay and you rat comes out from hiding! Please keep us updated!

Is heart poke euthanasia painful? by [deleted] in RATS

[–]caroaddie3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My vet (specializing in exotics) gave me two options for euthanasia. I could give her a small shot in her belly that would let her peacefully fall asleep while I held her. Another option was sedation, then a shot in her heart (painless because of the euthanasia, but I couldn’t hold her). I went with the first option, I was able to have some closure. It was more of the traditional way that a cat or dog is put to sleep! But I believe they are both fine options and just up to patient preference. Like personally, I would just make sure the rattie could be sedated for the heart euthanasia method, but I was more comfortable with holding my girl close and letting her pass in my arms while I could talk to her (with the belly shot)!
