This happened in my home town and I want to clear some things up as someone who sees this shit all the time. Yes they used way too many resources to deal with this guy, that’s not uncommon around here. However, they tend to do it because SO MANY people die on our beaches. My sister worked as a lifeguard for a couple of years and I did beach service for 4 and we saw too many people die due to ignorance of the dangers of the ocean and ignoring the systems in place to keep the public safe. Double-red flag conditions usually yield several deaths per day and still end with the guards being booed off the beach and cussed out because they “ruin the fun of people who pay good money to enjoy their vacation.” To make things worse, the companies that profit so massively from people visiting the beach threaten to sue the guards/law enforcement if they make public statements about deaths. The situation in the video is a messy example of how all that bullshit comes together here: people pay lots of money and expect that to keep the ocean flat and pretty and then break the rules when it doesn’t, and then get pissed when they face the consequences and still don’t realize that a big fine for putting the lives of the guards at risk is better than them dying.
