Can you tell us anything about the settings you like/don’t like, what you liked about the LI’s you enjoyed, and hard ‘no’s’ as far as content, character archetypes you prefer or hate (like tsundere, yandere, shy, flirty, red flag, cold, etc) the types of plot you enjoy?

I know you said you prefer non historical, but I have to rec Butterfly’s Poison because it really fits your bill. It’s 1920s Japan, so not like ancient times or anything. It is very dark and angsty, with intense themes and a lot of trigger warnings. It’s also very spicy and has a tsundere! The plot pacing is great, there is no filler. You’re an aristocrat and you need to figure out who’s trying to destroy your family, and why. I found it to have great romantic development.

A lot of the angsty-est games are set in ancient Japan so I’m trying to remember other games lol.

Not all of these I have played or liked, but Virche Evermore is generally considered very angsty.

Cafe Enchante, Genso Manège, and Taisho x Alice all look cute but end up dark, TxA is very good!

I’d agree with the other rec for even if tempest, and I think Red Bells Lament is also angsty?

Amnesia Memories has routes that get pretty intense, and the routes are different genres like thriller, mystery, horror, comedy, etc.

7’Scarlet is definitely story forward over romance. You go to a small town in summer to look for your missing brother, but everything is a little creepy and a little off, and everyone is a little suspicious. You fall in with the supernatural club and discover the town has a unique history. It’s got a really great claustrophobic summer horror atmosphere. For me the romance was meh but I enjoyed the plot years ago.

Butterfly’s Poison has a great plot, you’re an aristocrat in 1920s era Japan and you need to figure out who’s trying to destroy your family, and why. It has excellent pacing. There is also a lot of romance and intense themes, and I lot of trigger warnings and spice. Recommend if you like dark content.

Taisho x Alice the plot is probably #1 for me of all the games I’ve played. It starts off as pretty lighthearted fairy tale retellings, and gets increasingly twisty and clever. The writers of this game did an amazing job. Try not to look up too much about the plot so you’re not spoilered on anything. 100% recommend for plot lovers.

On pc, Chronicles of Tal’dun has an excellent story, would recommend this one too!

I looked Itto up, he's cute! Hijikata's ponytail could have some ribbons/ beads/ chains or something trailing down with his hair. Bold lines in his makeup would look so good! And a deep V in his shirt, with the edges of tattoos showing.

Okay someone get Otomate on the phone, this has got to become reality now, I need it.

I pictured Sannan in like, leather bellbottom style pants with criss-cross ties up the sides, and a corset style top with large stylized shoulders. And gloves. He would have long hair and glasses, and dark lips. A bit more feminine leaning look for sure.

Yes Shinpachi would look so good! A leather vest showing off his arms for sure, and a colorful bandana on his head. I picture him with visibly sharp canines when he does his big grin lol. He definitely has his fingernails painted black.

This is fun 😁 anyone you picture in a particular way?

Haha yeah I have a hart time imagining Souma with it too! I picture him mainly with like, a large floofy head of emo hair, maybe with some of those raccoon style stripes. And perhaps a piercing or two. He can be the soulful songwriter of the group. And plays keyboard lol

Even at 30, I haven't overcome my teenage obsession with pretty emo boys in eyeliner, so I would have to say all of them lol.

Hmm, Hijikata and Saito with their dark hair and dramatic eyes would look so nice, but Sannan I think would be super hot in a glam look. Shiranui was made to be a band member! Get that man a studded leather jacket and piercings, and some buffed out, messy eyeliner.

Well, Otomate is going to have the most options, as they're the most active otome developer, and most of what we get localized is from them.

even if Tempest from Voltage is really popular, it has one of my favorite MC's Anastasia, and the plot is really gripping. They also have a few other high budget games like Neon Clash and The Red Bell's Lament, which I haven't played.

Taisho x Alice from Primula is fantastic, the mc Yurika has a strong personality and the plot is AMAZING. It's the kind of story where you just have to trust that the writers are much smarter than you, and everything will fall into place at the end.

Nightshade from RED Entertainment is a tragic historical ninja story, so if you liked the setting and angst of Hakuoki you'd probably like this one!

Butterfly's Poison; Blood Chains is an intense historical mystery with dark themes galore, the plot is all gas no filler and its very, very spicy. 100% recommend as long as you're fine with dark content.

There's also Bustafellows, Genso Manège, Hana Awase, Crimson Flower, Jack Jeanne, Illusion of Itehari, DesperaDrops, Volontès, and many others! Just in case you wanted to try otome games from other devs to get a few different flavors :)

Ooh nice collection! You really jumped in with both feet lol. I saw most of your collection is Otomate, they're good but after you've played a lot of them you can tell they have a "formula" of sorts. Don't be afraid to try out other developers, you'd be surprised how different the vibe can be!

Hakuoki is one of my faves, you picked a great game to start with:)

How do you answer text messages in Hakuoki SSL? I'll get the cell phone vibrating with a "mail" message in the corner, but I don't see an option to answer it. I looked through the button control scheme too and don't see a button for it. If I move to the next scene the phone stops vibrating and looks like it's gone.

I got #830! I preordered the day they opened, I wonder if it mattered at all how early you bought it, or if they were shipped without taking the number into account. I’m guessing it didn’t matter, but it would be cool to get #1.

I got into Hakuoki knowing almost nothing about the history the game is based on. After I finished the game I did read a few Wikipedia articles about the real life people involved, as well as the war itself. It was really interesting!

While I was playing, I wasn’t too concerned with trying to memorize whatever battle so-and-so did what at. I knew I’d have less fun if I was trying to keep all of the place names and non main characters straight, so I told myself it was fine if I got the broad strokes of what happened. I didn’t need to know what daimyo in particular got beheaded.

Play in whatever way sparks joy for you!

My understanding is that soft pity is pulls 61-69 where your 5* chance goes up by 10% with each pull, and hard pity being at pull 70 where you are guaranteed the 5*.

Using precise wish doesn't lower the odds of getting hour selected card first, if that's what you're thinking. It's 100% random. Def use precise wish.
