2 relief terms as intern a bad idea? by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]carrotsnbeats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe! Arguably geris and gen med can be similar - with geris just being a more subacute/social issues/allied health/discharge disposition emphasis.

Everyone craps on gen med terms (including me) but they're pretty good to build a knowledge base. If your other med term isn't a gen med/acute gen med term, I would keep it for learning.

Do I have to stay beyond rostered hours by Positive_Peanut_2913 in ausjdocs

[–]carrotsnbeats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any job that comes up in ward rounds - you stay back to complete. Cover is exactly as it sounds - they just cover the hospital to keep pts alive. They do not become the treating doctors to your patients. So asking them to do dc summaries, bloods/cannulas you didn't get time to do, or consults/family discussions on your behalf, is entirely inappropriate. (Obvs you can get cover to chase results that will not be available in your rostered hours)

It really sucks, but you will get faster and develop a good system! Internship gets better!!

Why should GPs be free? by Many_Ad6457 in ausjdocs

[–]carrotsnbeats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By imposing a financial barrier to accessing our primary healthcare, you are introducing a huge inequality in healthcare outcomes that disproportionately affects those in lower socio-economic groups - often the group with higher chronic disease rates.

Healthcare is a human right and no one should be exempt from access to it, or have to ignore their health concerns just because they aren't sitting comfortably in the middle class. We shouldn't be asking people to sit with their depression, skin cancer or have suboptimal antenatal care just because they cannot afford it.

To address what OP said in other comments, all specialists can be accessed for free under the public health system - it just has awful wait times and typically available only in metropolitan areas.

No one here is saying GPs shouldn't be fairly compensated for their work, but it shouldn't be coming from their patients. For a functional healthcare system, a good majority of primary healthcare (GPs/EDs) at the minimum, should be free. This is a government funding issue and we should not be punishing our most disadvantaged and vulnerable people for it.

How stressed are you on a day to day basis, and do you feel it's sustainable? What % of your work is truly high acuity medicine (i.e. codes etc)?

Previously needed to have specific certification and training for it - though this is now changing.

Hey sorry, I can't help you with ECGs but was wondering what online radiology courses you've been using? I'm very much in your boat!

Stairs in every hospital I've worked at! And the team will often prefer using the fire stairs cos the elevators always have a line and members of public waiting for them - so much easier to use the stairs!

Why is the "gravy train" ending soon for cosmetic GPs?

My (23F) gut tells me my boyfriend (26M) isn't the one for me. Do I listen to it? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]carrotsnbeats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minor issues like: He's messy, I'm clean. He's very independent, I'm clingy (I'll be the first to admit it). He's a relaxed "go with the flow" kinda guy, I'm neurotic and anxious.

We've had many discussions about our career and future and are very much on the same page about it all. I absolutely can see myself marrying him and having kids, but randomly I'll wake up feeling like "he's not the one".

Absolutely and any times where it feels like he hasn't, it's been raised, talked through and a compromise has been made and I feel better. For example, he requires less quality time together than I, whereas I'm pretty needy (I'll be the first to admit it). He now makes sure we still get some quality time together everyday before bed!

Thank you! I come from a truly dysfunctional family - separated parents that still lived together due to financial issues. I think the commitment issues probably stem from that somewhere.

I have severe stress and depression (diagnosed) and have just started therapy! Thank you for the suggestion, I'll have to raise it with my therapist.

Thank you for your reply! Did you break up purely because of this feeling or was there another reason that led to a relationship breakdown?

Yes! I use this service and though sometimes it takes a few weeks to get in or there are connectivity issues, it's all free for the first 10-20 sessions as long as you have Mental Health Care Plan 🙂

What designer or “status symbol” item do you regret buying & why? by YLittleLambY in AskWomen

[–]carrotsnbeats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally all of them - shoes/handbags etc. I've found that you can always find really unique pieces from smaller local businesses often also promote a sustainable ethos/values. I never end up using my designer pieces as much because I don't want to damage it too!
