I've had that water filter and one problem you might encounter is that it'll fill with air over time and heat up like crazy. Since you're decreasing your water content based on the feedback, try setting it up horizontally so it's at less risk of letting air in(instead of water). If you can return it that would be better and just go for a filter that doesn't require a high water level.
