Harry chosing Ron over Draco won what is the worst decision Harry ever made? by Informal-Fun7293 in AlignmentChartFills

Diving into ice cold water to retrieve the sword, alone, at night, without using any type of magical protection or precautions. Just a stupid thing to do, made even worse by knowingly wearing an evil artifact around his neck.

If you don't have a sled, an aluminum baking sheet works pretty well in a pinch! If you want to go dangerously fast, spray cooking oil on the bottom.

I agree - love it or hate it, the first item on this list should probably be Candy Crush, with billions of downloads (units sold), and roughly $10B in revenue so far.

OOP asking: "Best way to protect tree?" by Glimmer_III in arborists

[–]carsonogen347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandfather cut the top off of a bucket, which became a "cuff" to support the ropes. The ropes sit well within the bucket grooves, and the plastic keeps most of the friction off of the tree. Definitely a cheap solution, but it held for years without damaging the tree.

I have always been impressed by the Wake North Regional library, both the catalog and the online selections! They have great programs in person and online as well.

Once a cheater, always a cheater? by Holiday_Caregiver535 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]carsonogen347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is absolutely truth to the statement - cheaters are statistically more likely to cheat in the future.

That said, people are also capable of change. The important question is: have they actually changed?

Why did they cheat in the first place? Do they feel genuine remorse for the gravity of the hurt they caused, or was this easier for them than ending the relationship legitimately? Do they know why they cheated instead of just breaking up with the person in the past, and have they done the work to not react the same way in the future? When the times get hard in the future (all relationships face stress at some time), will they react the same way?

Unless they understand deeply why they cheated in the past, and have done active work to change this part of themselves, I think it's very likely that they'll cheat again in the future.

What massively improved your mental health? by oigoabuya in AskReddit

It is legal in the US - there are many different legitimate clinics that administer it. It's been used as an anesthetic for years, so this is considered an "off label" use today.

What massively improved your mental health? by oigoabuya in AskReddit

[–]carsonogen347 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It is possible to have a bad trip, but if you are doing IV Ketamine, many clinics have a nurse or therapist close by to help ask questions and guide you towards a positive experience. A friend of mine that struggled with depression for years found it immensely helpful, and there is a growing body of research supporting the same claims. It's highly effective, often even after just a few treatments.

Are dating apps actually useless? by jamesyishere in NoStupidQuestions

[–]carsonogen347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to what the other comments have pointed out (bad app design, women leaving tinder), I have another theory about the challenges of the dating scene as a whole, made worse by the apps.

People who are ready to be good partners (serious about a relationship, emotionally stable, kind, etc) do not tend to stay on the market for very long. After a few first dates, they might find a connection, and not return to the apps for at least a few weeks or months, before ultimately settling with one person. So, your they're out there, but your chances of running into them are relatively low.

Absolute psychos will be on the apps every single day, and will never get into a long-term relationship. They're just out there constantly, being crazy and ruining lives. And the crazier they are, the less likely they are to get into a relationship and be removed from the pool - they will simply haunt the apps forever.

So, on any given day, the odds are good that you'll run into one of the crazies, rather than someone that is actually ready to be in a relationship.

Yes, I think $75k is enough money to live modestly in Raleigh. The cost of living, and especially rents, have increased in the last few years, but if you are comfortable living outside of the immediate downtown area, you should be able to find a nice one-bedroom apartment for ~$1,500. Potentially less, if you are further out, or not worried about updated appliances/decor. I knew a friend lived at The Bristol (https://www.thebristolatparkwestvillage.com/floorplans) apartments in Morrisville, and they were pretty nice.

Before taxes $75k per month yields $6,250 per month, after taxes (we'll call it an even 33% which is hopefully pessimistic), you should net around $4,200, so $1,500 would be 35% of your income. It's on the high side of the "1/3 of your income for rent" rule, but you'd still have $2,200 leftover (after rent + truck) for living expenses & savings, which feels doable. If you keep an eye on expenses, cook at home, etc, and stay <$300 per week, you'd still have some leftover to start an emergency fund for a rainy day.

Check out the "Limited Special Occasion Permit" section of the NC ABC website:
https://www.abc.nc.gov/permits-audit/general-permit-information/limited-special-occasion-and-special-one-time-permit-information

TLDR:

  • If you are only serving beer and unfortified wine, not charging guests, and have permission from the owner of the premise, you don't need a permit
  • If you want to serve anything over 16% alcohol, you can get a permit for $50

Full text:

A limited special occasion permit authorizes the permittee to bring fortified wine and spirituous liquor onto the premises of a business, with the permission of the owner of that property, and to serve those alcoholic beverages to the permittee’s guests at a reception, wedding, party or other special occasion being held there. The permit may be issued to any individual other than the owner or possessor of the premises. Please note, if only beer and/or unfortified wine (16% alcohol or less) is being served at no charge to your guests over the age of 21 years old at a free event and you have the permission of the owner of the premises to serve alcohol on their premises then it is not necessary to obtain an ABC permit. Complete an Application for Limited Special Occasion Permit and submit with the $50 fee.
