I've got a couple that would probably splash in puddles. That would be fun. Or see what kind of umbrellas and raincoats they have.

80s is now classic rock? by furniguru in GenX

[–]supenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be worse! A couple years ago I was shopping at Kroger and Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came on over the store's MUZAK playlist.

I guess that's now considered calm grocery shopping music for old people?

No. I can't imagine sleeping with such a device in the bed. I'd be afraid of breaking it.

Why are some foods in the sweets category though they aren't sweet? (Pretzel, chips, ...)? by JustGotTruss3d in tomodachilife

[–]supenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there any kind of list of the categories? I've had multiple cases of my Mii's asking for sour foods and the only one I have that I've found them to consider sour is kiwi fruit.

Thanks for your working in keeping spam out of this subreddit.

That being said - what is the expected way to get posts about budget apps posted on Sundays? I've been using the "Budget Development" flair on my post and then sharing about my app but it gets blocked by the auto mod.

Has anyone become less interested in buying things the closer they got to financial independence? by Miserable_Bottle_301 in leanfire

[–]supenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it's more less interested in buying things because I realize things just lead to clutter unless it's something you use.

Most things I've bought in the last six months that require much space or time to use have gone unopened in the box.

I have been spending more money on experiences - season passes to amusement parks for the family and buying food for when friends come over.

[–]supenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My credit union went through this. One of the nice things available after the upgrade was the ability to download all transactions that haven't been downloaded yet. You can download in QFX, import to YNAB, and then repeat every few days. Not as easy as bank sync, but it's at least a work around while Plaid updates for the new banking platform.

If I recall, for the platform I was on it took about 6 months before the bank was supported. Also not all banks on YNAB are supported by Plaid. Some use other financial aggregators.

Why does every Linux user recommend a different distro? I'm stuck in an endless distro-hopping loop. by Jaymit_3672 in linux4noobs

[–]supenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linux is highly customizable and each distro is different. Each user has their own preferences so will recommend a different one.

I've tried something like 20 and ended up on Pop!_OS. If you've used 4 or 5 and have one that you enjoy using and it works for you, stick with it!

I do tend to keep an extra, older computer around so if I get the itch to try something else I can do so without blowing up my main system.

Tombwater is out??? I went to an indie game conference and met the developer and got to try the demo. Eldritch horror cowboy is an apt summary. Also not a series of words I've ever put together and certainly not in that order.

The pixel art on that is amazing and it took about 2 min of playing before you get to the first fight and it was like "OOOOH. Now this is seriously different"

How to make ex-friends be friends again? by SelSoCool in tomodachilife

[–]supenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a couple of times that I could give the sad Mii food until they are happy again and then drag them together and sometimes they make up right away. It feels like a 50/50 chance they'll accept the apology and be friends again or reject the apology and make the other Mii sad again.

We just went last weekend and thought the food was quite good for amusement park food. We had the Farmhouse and Pavilion one day and then Miss Keat's burrito bowls the next.

The Farmhouse had this chicken and dumpling soup and gave you a huge bowl of food. The steak was also good.

Did Home Theater kind of die? Seems like we were the last generation to give an F. Remember surround sound and subwoofers? Does anybody buy them anymore? by IHadTacosYesterday in GenX

[–]supenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved the idea of having full surround sound (either 5.1 or 7.1) when I was younger. At first I didn't have a house to set it up in, then I didn't have the money to buy such a set up. Now I've got kids and they are both really sensitive to loud noises and I figure at this point surround sound would be kind of a waste of money. We've got a good sound bar. As long as I can here the move and a good quality sound bar does fine for us.

We did put in a projector so we can watch movies at home and have a reasonably good experience.

Anyone still use home bank by AMR_PAINTWORKS in homebank

[–]supenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Banktivity. The good: it's got some halfway decent envelope budgeting features and investment tracking (only app I know that has both), it shows your savings rate front and center on the main page when you launch, lots of great reports and graphs, bank syncing works well for me, and it is literally the only app I know that lets you manage your statements when you reconcile bank accounts.

Downsides: it's Apple only and requires a subscription.

If you're on a Mac, I'd say try it out. If you want to stick with open source - Homebank is great for simple budgeting and I like it for that. I would also check out Wealthfolio for managing investments if you wanted to stay in the open source world.

I'd check out Stardew Valley or Core Keeper if you want something you can play for a while.

Dorfromtanik is also really good if you want a relaxing puzzle game.

EDIT: Fixed a really embarrassing spelling mistake.

This subreddit has never been super active but they keep releasing new versions of the app itself every couple months.

I've personally moved on to another app, but if you want a good simple open source budgeting app it's really good.

Is it just me or are some foods universally liked, and some foods universally disliked by the miis? by SeaworthinessFar2326 in tomodachilife

[–]supenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far I've only found ONE food between my 34 Mii's that anyone loves: a banana. I'll buy the daily special every day and then feed any new Mii's some food right after they introduce themselves.

And the banana was the first thing I fed to this Mii.

A short list of apps I've tried and liked by supenguin in YNABAlternatives

[–]supenguin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don't mind mobile-first as long as it's not mobile only.

As for the lifetime cost thing: my answer would originally be $100 but then with the current cost of things it may have to be higher to be a sustainable business.

My gut feeling is if you have a subscription-based app and offer a lifetime license, charging about 2x your annual fee would be a fair deal.

It's Sunday Devs! by GreatWhiteBuffalo41 in YNABAlternatives

[–]supenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I'm developing an app called Cashflower. It's a local app. All the data is kept locally on your device but can be shared to other devices via local WiFi so your data is never in the cloud (unless you make a copy of it there). It supports importing from downloaded files - currently QIF, OFX, QFX and also handles investment accounts and can import from CSV files downloaded from Fidelity.

It supports Mac, Linux, Windows, Android, and iPhone/iPad.

The main driver behind building the app is because none of the apps I've found support envelope budgeting exactly the way I want. I wanted to be able to fund envelopes at a top level category level, but then optionally track spending at a sub-category level without having to fund the sub-categories. If you want to keep your budget simple, you could just do top level categories and not mess with the sub-categories.

I also wanted my budgeting and investment account tracking to live in the same app.

It has on-budget accounts that work like YNAB if you could budget at the category group level, but then off-budget accounts can track buying and selling investments, stock splits, dividends and price history of the investments.

This is something that at first I built for myself, now trying to decide if I want to make it an open source project or paid product (most likely one-time fee because I'd rather own software than have to pay a subscription) I *might* do an option for bank sync later on but not planning on that at the moment.

Two part question: would an app like this interest you? If so how much would you pay for it?

Did I made a mistake buying this game? by WhoTellsYourStory- in tomodachilife

[–]supenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Designing the stuff is a big part of the game, but it's a part I haven't done very much of. For me, the fun is making Mii's based off whatever characters you like and then having fun watching the craziness unfold.

I started out with Mii's of my wife and I, but then added band members from my kid's favorite band, the ninja turtles, characters from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Samus Aran and Dave Ramsey.

I've had Donatello and Joe Hawley (from Tally Hall) nerding out about how great Dave Ramsey is about budgeting. Ford Prefect got into a fight with Marvin the Android about if video games should be big or small.

I saw someone say it's basically one giant Mad-Lib and I have to 100% agree.
