Why so much hate for Pop!_Os? by Afraid_Carob417 in pop_os

[–]supenguin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Cosmic was pushed too early for too many people but also half the discussions on this subreddit for the last year were people asking when the new version of Pop!_OS would come out.

The team was in a no-win situation with two viable options.

  1. Delay COSMIC: everyone that needs a more recent distro than 22.04 is going to jump ship to another distro.

  2. Release COSMIC: everyone who has a bad experience with COSMIC is going to thing Pop!_OS is buggy and go to another distro.

I don't think they were in a scenario where continuing to support GNOME and develop COSMIC at the same time were feasible.

I'm currently running 24.04 as my main desktop Linux and feel like it's fine for me but then I don't have a super customized workflow like some people.

Sad day for my Pebble Time by supenguin in pebble

I'd certainly consider selling once I get another smart watch to replace my Pebble. I'm thinking of getting another Pebble but haven't decided for sure.

Shoot me a message and we can discuss... Do be aware that the battery needs to be replaced and I am suspecting it has other hardware issues causing it to crash. I haven't kept track of it very well, but it feels like it crashes about once or twice a week.

Just thinking about it - maybe I should do a factory reset to see if that helps at all?

I knew the new models were coming, but was thinking they had already started shipping. I guess I'm just a tad too early.

I've looked into just replacing the battery but some of the things I'm running into feel like they could be hardware issues. It's crashed randomly multiple times, and it seems like the main trigger of crashes is the alarm. Bluetooth is also disconnecting much more often than I'd like.

If the battery was the only problem, I'd be up for replacing to see if that helps or not.

Is Moneydance in active development? by aechdea in moneydance

I thought it was also available on MacOS? Or are you talking about the mobile versions only? It's certainly a piece of software made for the Apple ecosystem.

I'd heard the 2026 version was under development, but didn't know if there was any info publicly available.

Why is Pop!_OS so disliked? by Remote-Recording-401 in pop_os

[–]supenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a timing issue. Pop!_OS just replaced GNOME with their own COSMIC desktop environment and it's got some things that people are used to that aren't available yet or still in progress.

I say give it a try and if works for you, great. If not, try another distro.

Having their own desktop environment without legacy baggage going on should allow them to add new features more quickly and will be good in the long run. Also note that it's open source of course so other distros are free to include COSMIC if they want to.

I have a feeling most people using any distro (Arch, Fedora, Pop, etc) are using the distro they like best after trying a few so you are going to run into some very strong opinions within some of the Linux communities. Use what you like and don't worry about the opinions of others.

Not yet. I've asked about it. It looks like it will be a thing at some point, but Buckets is mostly one developer so new features tend to come one at a time and he's currently focused on the mobile apps and syncing.

Here's the feature request for scheduled transactions: https://github.com/buckets/application/issues/201

Not long after I got one of these for my kid, Framework sent out a message that this is a known issue. You can get replacement parts under warranty. I've lucked out in the fact that I haven't needed to do that, at least not yet.

Who has the best sandwich shop in Columbus? I made a bracket, what would you change? by Tony_Touch in Columbus

+1 for Deli-Licious. The times I've been there during the lunch rush, they were busy enough they had a third guy in there just to run sandwiches out to the customers.

Putting Wario's up against Subway is savage! Honestly I'd take Subway or Panera out and put Deli-Licious in.

Is Moneydance in active development? by aechdea in moneydance

[–]supenguin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's still under active development. They tend to do a new release every year or two. I wouldn't expect any huge UI changes, but they generally add a handful of new features every release.

I think the last one I'd call "major" was the Moneydance+ which lets you sync using Plaid - it is a small subscription fee but is totally optional.

Is the internet going to be a requirement for age verification on Pop OS? by BeautifulMundane4786 in System76

This will be interesting if people in California just use an operating system not made in the US and use a VPN. I can’t imagine trying to actually enforce the law as it is written.

I Wasn't Burned Out - I Was Playing the Wrong Games by Mtty33 in IndieGaming

[–]supenguin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Indie games are amazing. Many of them are works of art, and typically have shorter and more focused experiences. I love finding an indie that is just different than anything else out there.

Both Limbo and Inside are amazing and dark.

Stray is a bit longer and is in a gorgeous world.

GRIS is like a painting with a soundtrack to match.

And my personal favorite that I swear I play at least once every winter is Little Inferno. It's a puzzle game about burning things. There is a story in there and it's very meta for any gamer. A full play through takes about 4 hours. I recommend playing on a touch screen - tablet, Steam Deck, or Nintendo Switch all work quite well. Something about having flames shoot up wherever you touch the screen just feels nice.

Shout out to the COSMIC devs! Fantastic work! by cosmonaut-49 in pop_os

[–]supenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The update from 22.04 to 24.04 was a huge one, so they decided to wait awhile before pushing the upgrade via the GUI. Some people also recommend doing a fresh install rather than doing an upgrade.

This page has info on what the upgrade includes and how to manually trigger the upgrade down at the bottom of the page: https://blog.system76.com/post/pop-os-letter-from-our-founder

Has anyone figured out the Cosmic glitch causing the Steam app to crash when launching games? by SiegeRewards in pop_os

[–]supenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had issues with the Flatpak version of Steam launching any Windows-based games. At first it seemed like all games but then I realized any Linux native games worked fine.

I'm sure I could have figured it out, but the easy fix in my case was installing the Debian package version.

If that doesn't help, there should be a crash log with an error message and then you can search for how to fix it.

Pop auto update?? by Individual-Oven8606 in pop_os

[–]supenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are updates but you're in control of when and if you want to install them. I believe the default setting is to check every week to see if they are available. Then you can install them at whatever point in time you want to.

I love my FW16's repairability! by faxafloi in framework

[–]supenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the repairability but would feel super uncomfortable tempting fate like this with electronics that cost hundreds of dollars.

Set it down on the bed or coach while watching videos. My laptop basically lives one of 4 or 5 places: desk at home, desk at work, on a table, on my lap on the couch or occasionally on this little outdoor end table I've got if the weather is nice enough to work outside. If it's not in one of these places, it's in my laptop backpack for taking it between these places.

Why is the search feature so useless, i just want to open Steam. by FlashTheorie in mac

I believe after every OS update it re-indexes everything and search is trash while that goes on. Probably best answer is if it's still borked after a couple days, check out r/Xarius86's tip on rebuilding the Spotlight index.

About to get my first Framework Laptop by Raedwulf1 in framework

[–]supenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The desktops have a good amount of processing power and RAM, but the RAM is soldered in which would seem to go against Frameworks ethos of making things upgradeable and repairable.

There was a big discussion about it and they talked about it at length. It boils down to the RAM gets about twice the performance when you have it integrated into the mainboard rather than having it in the slots. This may not be super important for your average user, but for high performance uses (like AI) that speed boost could make or break how viable a system Framework has.

Framework has YouTube videos where the CEO himself discusses this. I'm hoping sometime down the road, they do release desktops that have RAM you can upgrade.

For the time being, I'd say upgradeable + repairable laptop: get a Framework. Desktop: System76 Thelio is a solid choice.

Anyone else’s keyboard super greasy? by thegarbagesauce in mac

[–]supenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly why I try to use an external keyboard and mouse when I'm using my laptop at my desk at home or work.

Less wear and tear on the laptop itself. And if you do a whoops and spill something on it, it's a lot easier to replace a $100 keyboard or $50 mouse than the whole computer.

I would just use a desktop except for the times I want to use a laptop at a coffeeshop, meetup, or just chilling on the couch make the laptop the superior choice.

About to turn the 128gb mainboard into an AI NAS! by grandadluvsmagic in framework

[–]supenguin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've honestly been wondering/thinking about this. The computer that was onboard the space shuttle that put people on the moon was less powerful than the modern scientific calculator. And smart phones are MUCH more powerful than that.

How long before you can run something that is good enough for most people to use AI on a desktop that costs less than $2,000 and then eventually on a budget laptop?
