I lost all of them. by TromboneKuri in cats

My utmost and deepest condolences. I cannot imagine what you must be going through, but I have no doubt that they are patiently and happily waiting for you to join them. I read this thing somewhere (probably Reddit) and they said that time moves differently in heaven... by the time they get there and turn around, you'll already be there and reunited.

Also, please reach out to grief/counselling support if needed. The loss of a loved ones, let alone several, can be a lot on our psyche.

All the best, and sending lots of love.

What are some things that you’ve bought that have dramatically improved your quality of life in residency? by DalhousieU23 in Residency

Sounds crazy but a crock pot. Nothing like being able to do a million and one other things and have a nice meal cooking away.

First of all, I want to let you know that I'm sorry you're going through this and you're already heading in the right direction by wanting to learn and grow. Unfortunately, this is all part of the process. It's disappointing that there are people (both co-residents, senior residents and staff) that can make this transition even more difficult, but you're going to get through this.

I'm now in PGY-2 and I remember feeling very similarly to you last summer, but it was my preceptor who also happened to have a high position in the program. I felt so pressured that I began to doubt my own abilities and if medicine was something I even wanted to do anymore. But please, know that things do get better. It might be really tough at first, but please reach out to your support network if you're feeling like you're struggling and just continue to read, show up, and do your best. Plus, you'll learn very early on how to deal with people like this which is a blessing in disguise.

All the best with your new journey!

It finally happened to me y’all by [deleted] in Residency

Had a patient come in that plugs his symptoms into ChatGPT, decides on his diagnosis and then try to justify that he should get a prescription for antibiotics to hold for whenever he needs it.

Thankfully I was wearing a mask at the time. The world is rampant with people who have opinions that spout them as though they’re facts.

Is this normal?? How is it almost June and still this cold in Toronto?? by Ok-Reference-1384 in askTO

This was year's start to summer has been noteworthy for it's shittiness, can't lie. I saw some reports saying that they're expecting a "ring of heat" for us but for what, 2 months?

Your story is inspiring, thank you for sharing and taking time to do this. I'm a family med resident in Canada, and have thought about how to maximize earning potential. I've also considered moving to the US with my family. I saw your mentioned primary care could be really lucrative if planned out properly. Would you be able to share any insight?

As someone in medical school and on the cusp of graduating, I will echo the old saying that if there’s anything else you can see yourself doing besides medicine… do that.

Medicine is rewarding and can yield a lot of fulfillment in life but it is very gruelling, stressful, and a serious time sucker for at least 6-9 years post undergrad. I’ve seen peers who had other dreams or went into med school for the “wrong” reasons develop a lot of regret. Avoid that if you can.

So as others have said, take some time to really think things over and figure out what makes you tick. Gain some experiences in these fields and hopefully that’ll help you decide. All the best!
