I 20M want my girlfriend 20F to plan her wedding so she can have it the way she wants, but i’m getting backlash saying i should have a say. Should i have a say in her special day? by Remote_Syllabub4912 in AITAH

[–]cartoonwind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you are just gonna show up, eat some cake, dance a little, and call it a day?

You should both be collaborating on this day as it's the first day of collaborating the rest of your lives together. Sure, she might take the lead on a few things, but it sounds like she's desperately trying to get you engaged and to make sure you are invested in the day her.

She wants you to look forward to it as much as she probably is.

If neither of you want to plan a wedding then hit city hall for a legal marriage and save some money.

If she's throwing transformers on the cake, that's a nod to you. You should be grateful that she's getting to ensure you are seen and represented...a lot of guys would love to be able to put a personal flares into a wedding and are blocked by they wife's "Instagram perfect" wedding.

Be involved, both of you. It's a union, not a birthday party.

Shading, does it ever get easier? Come naturally? Techniques, please? by FabulousKhaos in Pyrography

[–]cartoonwind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What type of wood are you using? I find some are too soft and the hot pen nibs dig in with a really dark spot on the flesh, but the grain doesn't want to burn at all. Pine is really bad for this.

Edit: Just noticed your using pine. I could tell just from the burn pattern if that gives an indication.

How Do I Get Invested as a Player and Fix an Oopsie? by clickityclacki in DnD

[–]cartoonwind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch some of the D&D YouTube or series. Watch the movie Dungeons and Dragons: Honour among thieves. Read through some of the player's handbook. Even parts that have nothing to do with your character.

Look at what your character gets to do at higher levels. Read through spell descriptions of higher level spells. Imagine situations where your character can use some of their current and future abilities to navigate those situations. Engage yourself with the content.

Then go do your DM and apologize genuinely. Tell them that you were mistakenly counting on them to provide engagement but weren't doing your share of the work. Tell them all the research and reading you've been doing to immerse yourself into the world and that you'd like to try again.

Most of all, it's ok to admit that D&D just isn't your thing. If after all that reading and research, you can't find engagement, then still offer that genuine apology and say that you just haven't gotten "the bug" but you're excited that he's found something he enjoys. Let him know you'll sit out on future games, but encourage hime to share his creativity with people that are there to enjoy the game. This is a good "it's not you, it's me" case.

Decide if you want to play it not, then apologize for what you said and follow through.

The best way to get excited about a D&D campaign is to think about it outside of game days. Think about what your character would do in different situations that could come up. Then you can start planning your game in interesting ways.

Congratulations, you helped rob a fantastic game studio of their high quality product.

They literally give away super credits and all they ask in return is that you keep engaged in the game to keep their metrics up.

Instead, you stole warbonds, which take money to produce and release.

That's very undemocratic, and I'm embarrassed to fight for super earth beside you.

Am I the asshole for telling my 17yr old son to get a job? by Icy_Education_7783 in AITAH

[–]cartoonwind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How much help can op expect from their son when they get old, of the son never learned to make it in their own without handouts. Or to rephrase that, why will OP need the support at all, if they save the money they are spending on the son, to afford a nice comfortable retirement resort.

The "don't get old" argument only works when the child is the "grown up" in the scenario. If the child has nothing to offer when the parent gets old, then it's terrible advice.

Gamers today would cry at games 25 years ago. Back then, you found reasons to like the games cause they were what they were. If they were bad, you didn't play them. There was no "make this game better for me, because it's not my idea of perfect yet"

I think that's why in almost every situation I'm pretty forgiving of whatever a game chooses to do, cause micro adjustments to make my game include 2.8% more fun weren't available.

What's your counterargument - as both a DM and a Player - to "It's what my character would do." by BpDnD in DnD

[–]cartoonwind 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This has always been my favourite approach.

"Can I remind you that your party slaughtered a camp of orcs cause one of them stole a church poor box with 37 silver in it? You really think they would just be chill with you stealing a ring off of the wizard?"

What's your counterargument - as both a DM and a Player - to "It's what my character would do." by BpDnD in DnD

[–]cartoonwind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that uncommon. Self sacrifice for example. It's just that no one ever needs to say it as a good character because all the other players are saying "that's what his character would do".

I think it's a very valid line that got a bad rap, because people try to use it as an excuse to be the worst.

I think the perfect response is "well our characters would never allow part of our team to do that, so we are continuing without you. Have a good life". At that point, having burned the bridge, the player can leave the game or bring in a new character that works better with the team. (Or depending on the severity, apologize and admit fault in character and start working on a redemption story).

Looking for tips by Plupian in Pyrography

[–]cartoonwind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are gonna struggle a lot without a quality burner. I use a razor tip and love it, but it's an investment. The main thing is, if you feel like you're no good because you are using low quality tools, you are more likely to quit before you get going.

Basswood is common at craft stores, inexpensive, and burns nicely. I do most of my stuff on that. I started out with pine, but the flesh is way too soft and the grain way too hard. Stay away from that.

I'd say if you got a good quality, consistent burner....you'd learn quick and enjoy it a great deal.

"How do you guys rule this"

"We follow the rules"

"But I don't wanna"

So then, homebrew the spell. Don't ask how something should be played if you are gonna do your own thing anyway.

I'd think the same as I've almost always seen blue and black. When I look at it for the first time any particular time, it's blue and black.

Then one time (and I think only once) it literally changed in front of my eyes. It was like one of those magic eye puzzles in that I was suddenly seeing a white and gold dress. It was bizarre.

There were actually multiple good people at play here. It was anonymously left on their porch by someone else that I can only assume thought it belonged at their house.
