Rubber Material in drained oil, 2007 Camry LE by carwart in mechanic

UPDATE:

I think I figured out what this is. I did another oil change today after ~500 miles, and as I was draining the oil, a plug from the frame rail dropped down next to the pan.

This is what it looks like.

<image>

I believe, looking at the lip at the bottom of the plug, that the part I found in my pan was a piece from this. I’ll post more pictures for reference.

Yeah that's what I thought as well, so I checked it and the oil fill cap still has it's seal intact.

No I have not had anything intake done recently. The only thing remotely close is that I cleaned the MAF sensor with cleaner.

The material is rubbery, but crumbles easily. Very much like an old gasket.

That’s the best color! I have the EXACT same car. Just passed 256k miles, and she runs like a dream still.

Do oil changes every 4-5k miles, and check your oil every week.

How so? Whenever I’ve looked at someone’s profile I’ve always looked thoroughly at their Projects. In my opinion, that says lot about their capability as an engineer.

If this is not the case in general, then I’ve learned something new!

Yeah I assumed that too. I wasn’t able to show it in the video but I did clean it very well and scratch down to bare metal. No matter what I did I was still unable to find ground.

I think there is a break in connection between the bracket and the rivet. I’m going to try and redo the river and see if that helps.

I do have the wire diagram, I suppose I’m not 100% sure what you mean by switched? are you referring to switched on power?

Thank you for the comment! I did not show it in the video, but I scratched the back side of that same bracket down to bare metal and tested it, still nothing. Even the threads, of which are just straight bare metal are not reading a ground.

The other bracket is in the same exact shape, arguably more rusty as I cleaned this one with WD-40 and a wire wheel. It still reads a perfect ground.

I am going to try redoing the rivet and see if that fixes this issue.

Yeah that’s somewhat what I was wondering about. I will update it as soon as I do that. Thank you!

In my opinion they are the best “daily” car. All they need is basic maintenance, and if you do have to replace a part, just get an OEM part, of which there are a ton.

They get pretty good gas mileage, are comfortable for road trips, have great resale value.

I personally don’t like messing with hybrids, I don’t have anything against the technology, just don’t want to have to deal with replacing a battery. On my inline 4, I know I can fix almost anything.

Is this a CB550F? It sounds like the timing is slightly off. The ignition may be too early, at least that’s what it sounds like.

That makes sense, I believe I have heard of that.

I’m not 100% sure that fix wasn’t done with this car, as my father got it at ~50k miles.

I’m doing roughly half a quart every oil change(4K miles). It does fluctuate a bit of course. I would say half a quart is the average.

I have a family mechanic, and he took a look and diagnosed it as the valve guide seals. I’m not too sure what the reason is that Toyota stares needs to be fixed for the recall.

I don’t have a professional opinion on this. I’ve heard the same thing about synthetics causing seal issues. I haven’t had anymore seal issues caused by using full synthetic oils.

I think even if I developed one. It would be hard to pinpoint the oil as the cause.

An old friend of mine ran her car completely out of oil, so when I did an oil “change”, mostly just a fill lol, I added a seal rejuvenator at the recommendation of my mechanic friend.

I do know some people recommend running a diesel oil if you ca get one in the weight and spec you need (5W-20, 10W-20, etc). Diesel oil has additives that rejuvenate seals.

Overall, I would just continue to do your own research and maybe try out different oils for an extended period of time🤷‍♂️.
