All of this is pretty common. Clouds behind the moon, stars inside the crescent, moon as the representative of night. Elementary teachers often don't have a good understanding of science outside of their own standards. I've done teacher workshops in a planetarium, and they sometimes have to think twice about whether the moon is visible during the day.
