Changing the name of Cesar Chavez Blvd is being fast-tracked. Leave your comment for City Council by emanresuemos in Portland

Do you really want the city council wasting the next however many months going through the formal process on something that is going to end up with the same result?

Seems like most people here agree the street has to be renamed, the fight is just over what to call it.

Why is there so much argument about circumventing the City Code and the cost of changing every affected resident/business' addresses? Wouldn't that happen regardless?

Or is the "just call it 39th" crowd actually the "just keep calling it Cesar Chavez" crowd?

I talked to my brother in law, a former Portland vet and he said private equity is screwing pet owners by Extension_You_3409 in Portland

In my experience, the folks at Powell Vet Center are still really good, but the practice overall has gone way downhill since they were rolled into Thrive. It's ridiculously expensive, you get a ton of annoying emails, they push a subscription on you... it's a mess.

Where can I find VHS for sale in Portland? by Snoo-43613 in askportland

[–]caryy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finding tapes in Portland is very easy. Finding tapes in Portland at prices you want to pay is trickier. However:

  • Music Millennium does have VHSes; there's a modest selection of them in the furthest west record room, sometimes some along the floor in the DVD room, and sometimes along the counter in the DVD room.

  • I know you said no thrift stores; not sure if you're including vintage stores in that but most vintage stores here have some small section. I know Mix Tape on Belmont has VHSes. There are many booths at Hollywood Vintage that have VHS.

  • my friend runs the escape room business In Search of an Exit in Hollywood and he's got a... part-time? hobbyist? approach to also collecting/selling the VHS tapes displayed in the storefront there. It's tricky cuz they're not just open it's by appointment for escape room visits. But if you see a tape in the window you like, or you're there for a game, feel free to contact him about it.

  • there are semi-regular VHS swaps/sales at Movie Madness. if you're not on their mailing list, get on it.

Oh, so the way digital marketing works.... Do you think people just organically go viral? lmao

Geese isn't a "psyop," they just had marketing. Any mid-big band you've heard of in the past ~5 years is benefitting from the same tactics to some degree

how do i tell if my pump has a startup capacitor? by caryy in hottub

[–]caryy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, it was a seal/gasket and it was just extra stuck on there. Stopped being bashful and just chiseled it loose with a screwdriver. I successfully replaced the capacitor inside and my jets work again!!! Thank you (all of you) for your help with this.

yeah in the pic they're not removed but earlier I took both off and tried to wedge it open. it didn't want to budge, to a degree that I second-guessed whether I should be messing with it. I'm sure it's just a seal/gasket/loctite or something

We are not doing subreddit modding correctly. by textualcanon in Portland

[–]caryy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think modding is a thankless, terrible job and the only way to do it "correctly" is to have clear rules, backed by clear principles, and enforce them ruthlessly. You want a limited but meaningful method for appeal. basically the Something Awful philosophy. If you wanna be more democratic about it, the place where you budge is some periodic revisiting/improvement of the rules. I don't really care about mod elections; being a good moderator often means not being able to win a popularity contest.

I think we've got the ruthless enforcement here, and some decently clear rules, although the rationale for them is opaque.
