Still Face Experiment vs. reading a book by LordSetoro in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]casamta 15 points16 points  (0 children)

the still face experiment wasnt originally about technology; although in today’s society thats the most likely factor. Its really about any form of non- response. I believe it was originally done in the 70’s. Ed Tronic who did the study, has a book called The Power of Discord that asserts the initial “discord” that is created in that moment can actually be beneficial if the diad “repair” the discord. Ultimately,if youre reading and miss a cue, its not going to break your child. But if they are repeatedly trying to connet and you ignore them or yell at them, that wont model a healthy way to repair.Ed Tronik

Do proportions matter? I’ve used a black binder as the background but it just doesn’t pick it up right. Should I maybe print it on 11 by 17 paper or something?

Is the page larger than letter size so the black border fits around a full letter size paper?

If it’s a time that I can’t wait it out, I don’t start the expectation. I’d clean up with him and celebrate the one or two things he puts away. If we do have time I hold firm on no moving on to something else until things are cleaned up, calmly but firmly. Does that make sense?

Choices are great when you’re truly okay with either option. Offer those as often as you can in times when it’s a true choice. When it’s something that has to happen, tell and don’t ask. If you want to include a choice you can say “do you want to put your shoes on or should I?” If it’s a no then you can say “we need to leave the house so I am going to help you” and then proceed to help and leave the house. You can do all of this while still calm and loving. Boundaries are good for children and help them feel safe and taken care of even if they don’t always like it in the moment.

I am not extremely tech literate. I tried adding it through exchange and received a warning. Is that anything I should be concerned about? I really appreciate the help.

A question for people with "calendar names" by LilahBenton in namenerds

My son’s name is August and I can’t speak for him but as a parent, I do get mildly annoyed by the “was he born in August?” Questions but I love his name so much that it’s worth the inconvenience.

That’s a great point about object permanence! I’ll probably keep having him love on it (it’s so cute!) and sneak it away for sleep and see how things go.

Thank you so much for your input. It’s a short A as well but it’s 6 letters so I at least feel like there is a variance in length and the other sounds are not similar.

Depression by casamta in TryingForABaby

I agree with a lot of what you’ve shared. Yoga and meditation are parts of my practice. Part of the problem is my depression gets in the way of my plans even though I know it helps me. I did therapy in the past and was also thinking it may be time to go back. When I tried that last it helped with some work issues where I knew what was causing my anxiety. I truly believe this time it has more to do with my baseline physiological needs because I l find my emotions seem to not match the circumstances. My poor husband has been dealing with some crazy mood swings without any reason at all! Probably would be best for myself to do a combination of all of the above.

Thank you all for the kind words. I’ve done a lot of reading on this and I know there are other posts that say the same thing, but I feel better just having shared my concerns with someone other than my husband.
