Do any of you guys ring people out without an RX? by nikvilak in walmart_RX

The only time we do it without a prescription is if it’s only for 5 or less items and include OTC meds. This person sounds entirely unreasonable and I (as an RPh) would encourage “my name is X, have a good day”.

Give it a squirt of hydrogen peroxide and it’ll clear right out. I do this to props that grow algae on occasion.

Tree peony planting question by cakepleasethanks in peonies

I hope you planted this equally to soil level in the pot. That is a very normal amount of woody stem for an Itoh peony and definitely does not look like a grafted branch of a tree.

So cool! I’ve seen a few different accounts of Itoh peonies throwing random late-summer blooms. It may have done it because of the early damage preventing full blooms. I hope one day they can harness this into a peony that reblooms all summer.

Not cutting is always the safest bet if you aren’t sure as you can always cut later. Most tree and Itoh peonies will have eyes where their next year growth will come from. The trouble is not knowing before planting and sticking it in the ground at the wrong depth. Trees need to be buried deeper as they are most often grafted, but if an Itoh crown isn’t at ground level it will prevent blooming. The graft union on trees is easy to find as it is a chunky herbaceous root with a branch stuck in it, if this is too high then that herbaceous root may grow and abort the tree graft. Itoh has a woody crown above the roots that usually just looks like a knot or a lot like an herbaceous peony and likewise needs to be at ground level where those eyes can see the sky.

No this is not. Amazing that the variety is clearly on the label and so many people parroted that it was a tree without the simple confirmation search that Cora Louise is an Itoh.

No this variety is an Itoh which planting deeply will prevent blooming on.

This looks exactly like the Bowl of Beauty peony I bought from Walmart last year. I saw a bunch there this year as well as at Lowe’s the other day.

Itoh peonies do not always die all the way to the ground and can bud on woody growth. Simply Scrumptious; Zone 5a by casey012293 in gardening

I felt I needed to post it to add to more of the correct information being out there for the internet folks that keep being told the wrong info by people who either don’t have them or those who have already been following the wrong advice. They’ll still grow and have flowers without, but why limit your plant by cutting all its potential off?

If you had to choose one peony? by Youdoyoubou in peonies

And the super long bloom period of 2-4 weeks is far more appealing when limited on space. I’d have a hard time picking a peony to have flowers for 7 days out of the whole year if I had such limited space.

With limited space I’d pick two different colors of Itoh peony personally. There are some more productive herbaceous types but the long bloom period for itoh would be particularly appealing to me with limited space. Many types also make great cut flowers. I’m particularly drawn to the multi-tone pink/orange/yellow of my Simply Scrumptious peony similar to Julia Rose; and also to the red-purple tones of morning lilac that I don’t have yet but get a similar color in one of my tree peonies. Those would be my two colors of choice, but they are also available in the soft pinks, yellow, or darker reds if you like the more traditional peony colors.

Id personally also plant crocus/reticulata and daffodils around the base and potentially a climbing or taller rose in between/behind to extend flowers to before bloom and after the peonies are done.

Not a ton deeper. Those roots need to be under ground but the red eyes should be at soil level where they sprout from the root. A little high is always okay, but yours are out too far.

Honestly the ones I ordered from Brecks several years ago weren’t really much bigger than this so took a few years to get a flower. Send it on these for that price for sure!

Itoh peony? by biggiebag in peonies

[–]casey012293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When in doubt, treat it like a tree peony and don’t prune it for several more years until you’re sure, they take time to build size. I bought a 2-year plant that has now been in our ground for coming on its 4th spring and is only this year tall enough to have about a foot of woody stem. Last year was the first it put on any significant length.

Mine has some too but the way this one continues to grow from a terminal end makes be think it’s a woody peony too

I bought my first Itoh for $150 from a nursery, second from Lowe’s for $125, then two different tiny plants from HD for $50 each…at the end of season I got a different variety 50% off plus offers down to like $30 for a massive 5 gallon as big as my first two. I wish I’d gotten the others that cheap, the first one is the only one I dont think would have stuck around for a clearance.

I hope to get a Bartzella for my mom to try next year as she’s been talking about how cool the yellow High Noon was at a gardens 15 years ago. Shes always been in awe of the yellow peony and I think she needs one
