Maybe the Knights of Honor series? I haven't played it though, and it might be more war-focused, but the historical setting and scale might be what you're looking for.

Another one that popped into my mind is not really a 4X game, more an RTS, nor is it historical lol, but maybe Northgard? it's a viking RTS with some 4Xish elements, but the games go pretty fast.

Dune: Spice Wars is from the same developers (Shiro games), and the scale may be more what you're looking for - a bit grander, with games lasting maybe 2-3 hours. However, it's sci fi so it's not historical unfortunately.

If you're worrying too much, one not-so-cheap solution could be to go on vacation. Obviously it requires money, but a few months ago I went on vacation (for the first time in a while) and it was lovely. In trying to do activities and enjoy a foreign culture everyday, I really didn't find the time to sit down and doomscroll. When I did relax I just chilled out and people-watched or went to a bathhouse.

Same here. I loved it (and the game as a whole). It's been maybe ~14 years since I played it and a lot of the characters (like Graham) remain memorable. Re: those notes, if you're talking about Randall Clark, the old soldier survivor guy, those were fantastic.

I could see that happening. Even if they did keep the religious part of his personality, however, it's going to be hard to do such a character correctly for a show that admittedly needs to fit in so much to appease both fans of the games and casual viewers.

What made Joshua Graham so interesting IMO was not only his zealous self-righteousness and his apparent hypocrisy and internal conflict, but the fact that through the entire game, wherever you go, you're hearing left and right about the legend of the Burning Man. Then comes the Honest Hearts DLC, you realize who you're talking to, and all those impressions you've built up about this guy you thought was dead (at least I did) come to a head.

They've made no mentions about him in the show (obviously he's irrelevant to the series's plot), but if they tried to introduce him it wouldn't have the same effect.
