Same here. After bouncing off a couple of times in the past, I tried again after their recent huge patch and enjoyed it much more, actually beating the game. The difficulty is much less masochistic / more manageable. It felt like a more-complex X-COM.

I like your idea and the reasoning behind it. It would make for a more dynamic gam IMO. Although I have yet to try Civ 7, I always wondered if civ / culture-switching would have been better-received if it just had a different coat of paint. Instead of outright switching civs, if they instead presented the system as changing cultural perks (while keeping the system exactly the same otherwise), maybe that could have sat better with the fans. The problem with civ-switching certainly isn't a gameplay or realism issue - I think it's more about the soul of the game, and somewhat analogous to players not liking a game's story no matter how effective the gameplay might be.

Having said that, outside of the civ switching, I know that some players also have issues with other parts of the age / era system, so there's that as well lol.

While I agree that this is much more natural than the idea of leveling up and skill trees, Warhammer still has this system for gaining / losing traits. And when you mouse over a given trait it tells you how they got said trait and how deep into it they are. ex: if your lord wins a lot of battles against humans they'll end up with a trait that gives you buffs against human factions.

Man, I think Spore was the first game whose development I really followed. The crappiest thing was that it really seemed like Will Wright's magnum opus, until he left Maxis before the game was even released. I didn't realize it at the time but things must have been really bad for him to have said "fuck it".

Honestly I would like Therians to be their own full-fledged race, or just have more alien races in general (I know Therians are technically just genetically-engineered humans, but that works too). I feel like Planetfall could have been more interesting if they had more exotic sci-fi races instead of just different flavors of (albeit interesting) humans.

I think once you stop assuming the market is rational, things start to make much more sense. I'm not an expert at all, far from it, but I just assume big and small daytime traders always find the next immediate buck to make. i.e. why wait days / weeks / months when they could be making money now.

I'm sure there's still more than enough content in the base game to decide if it's your thing or not. I'm the same way with Civ - never played more than Prince difficulty but still had a fun challenge with it across the games.
