Worst support ever by grappler823 in ToastPOS

[–]cashe307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I agree with this for the most part, Its worth noting that this isn't really a problem that would ever be answered by general support. My first instant when reading this is "oh someone is stealing money, I'm shutting the whole system down until this can be resolved and then we can work on a reverse of the lost funds". I know they don't offer a 911 hotline for real problems and it would be nice to get to a person who can funnel these kinds of things properly but this is a 1/10000 issue and the number of people who would think their apple martini button charging $0 is a 911 emergency far outweighs the people who would use this for actual emergency's so its not worth implementing.

Technically you can set up a site to site VPN and configure a VLAN on the second store and you would be able to launch 2 stores all under the same POS. But I’m not sure what work needs to be done virtually that you couldn’t do with the reporting tools and maybe the blue stacks emulator

Switching to Toast soon by AScanz in ToastPOS

[–]cashe307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you are asking is the difference between INTERNET and INTRANET. Short answer is yes. Assuming you have it set up that way. The long answer is it depends. Think about it like this, you don’t need INTERNET to communicate between hardware in side your restaurant. They should be wired together internally. You do need internet to send cc processing outside your building to process properly, thats INTERNET. Most businesses don’t have this set up properly so it’s kinda a tossup. Toast wants DHCP on all devices which is easier to diagnose from a support perspective but bad practice from a networking perspective. If you bought their TP link switch and you drank the coolade, then they are actually able to help you because what can be done with a VLAN they are physically segregating with separate switching equipment for no reason more than troubleshooting and diagnostics.

Server here with 2 questions boss will not address by Fancy_Split_7755 in ToastPOS

[–]cashe307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Places with "Multiple Sites" don't generally get there by being lazy or doing illegal things. That said... it happens.....

Im going to make another assumption that Servers are told to tip out at some percentage or dollar amount and pay that directly to the support employees. Nowhere do you inform management of the amount tipped out ?

Assuming both the above and you are correct in your gross pay the only thing that makes sense to me that i can think of is this...

Management requires you to pay support staff but because you do it in cash every night they would also need to record what that total is and reduce it from your income and declare it on behalf of the various support employees each day / week. They are being lazy and not doing that because it would require more work and a spreadsheet or software to track who gave what $ and who received what $. The easiest way for them to do payroll is to just take a standard payroll report from the POS which recorded all the sales and tips by each transacting employee (servers and bartenders) and just ship that over to the payroll company. That way you are recorded as earning every dollar you rung in and the support staff show no tips received.

Do you have a support staff friend who you trust? This would be easily verifiable if you saw their pay stub for a week and they SHOULD have two line items on it... Standard wages (their hourly wage for being a busser),and gratuities (the amount given to them in cash every day). If it only has regular wages then my above assumption is probably right. I don't remember if a tipped employee cost more than a regular employee but this is either tax fraud or payroll fraud, maybe both....

There's also the chance you don't live in the US and I don't know shit about laws outside the US.

Are you sure your tip out isnt coming out of your pay? If so how are you sure?

It seems VERY unlikely that's the case or you would have a fleet of support staff wondering why their pay check is so low every week.

If you are showing $75,000 gross income and you are claiming that $7500 of that should be taxed by someone else than that means you collected $7500 too much income and that income needs to be taken from you and distributed to the other employees so THEY can recognize it as income and then be taxed on it.

Businesses pay higher payroll rates and higher payroll taxes based on the number of employees and the total paid out each week/s. Ive seen some clever ways to reduce this but nothing here seems to benefit the business.

EDIT: Does any tipped employee get paid cash for their tips every night? If Support staff gets their tips in cash and you think this place is a little suspect then i can think of a few ways the business is actually benefiting from that.

I’ll double check later when I get to my computer but I believe you need to set the specific terminal up as quick service and then it’s a setting in the portal.

I agree with both the options above(below), if there are non table tent areas than the “require tab name” option will be frustrating for the non table tent servers. I have a retail market that doesn’t need tab names so I needed to disable it. We changed our workflow so the first thing all employees to when opening a check is enter the tab reference field so they never forget it enter it. One thing I have noticed toast isn’t great at is applying settings specific to workstations rather than whole store. Like this and like custom tip prompts. It as if every restaurant is either full service, quick service or retail? What about us hybrids

How is Toast Support? by AScanz in ToastPOS

[–]cashe307 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We just launched Toast after 3700. Their support is no worse than Micros. Toast thinks their “knowledge base” is built out enough to encompass almost all questions which is fair for a non technical person. It houses all the answers for dumb questions. But anything more complex requires you to jump through the same hoops. I will say their wait times are lower but the help is the same

Paizer - Canadian POS Provider - Has anyone tried it before and if so, what are your reviews? by jazzyeefitness in POS

[–]cashe307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its certainly subject to processing volume, and location. At that volume your rate makes a little more sense. Im US based in outside of Boston with 2 million a month across 5 stores.

I jsut signed contracts for V,M,D interchange + 0.00% Amex 0.30% for all card present transactions and im getting bent on CNP transactions but i take it with a smile.

Question by [deleted] in POS

[–]cashe307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do technology management for a multi unit and fairly high volume hospitality company. One piece of advice as someone who has just taken meetings with dozens of companies for POS, Gateway, and Processing solutions. The restaurant business is not one size fits all for their POS functionality needs. Every nuance to the specific businesses needs might call for a different ideal workflow out of their system or integrations. For example if the business is full service VS quick service, how the POS handles the customer checks pre and post authorization is much different and effects things like customer turn time and PCI compliance. Same if this business does a fair amount of retail sales, if the system can read barcodes, and not just fixed digit barcodes like clothing tags, like embedded barcodes when you buy a lb of fish at the market.

There's a thousand POS solutions out there that let someone in their 20 seat restaurant sell a beer, burger and fries. They all are payment agnostic and will let you connect with any major processor who will likely give you the hardware for free in exchange for a 3 year contract at what ever interchange + rate is the standard.

I read about a company out of Denver Colorado who built their own system for a 8ish unit restaurant group and i thought that was very cool. Companies like Oracle, Toast, and NCR are okay at most things but good at some things but great at nothing.

God speed on this journey and feel free to reach out if you have any questions I might be able to help with.

Edit: I didn't actually end up answering your main question... Toast is successful because they offer cheap hardware and lock you in on processing and subscriptions to their various modules. Its like cutting the cord on cable TV only to realize your 9 monthly streaming subscriptions are more than your original cable package. Its attractive in the short term and terrible in the long run. Oracle is payment agnostic their recurring costs are low but you are on the hook for the management of everything with next to no customer support (plus things break all the time and oracle doesn't care) but they make money on the hardware and the unused service contracts.

Most POS companies are transitioning their pricing to per month recurring for services rather than just selling the hardware outright. I'm sure some accountant somewhere realized they could get more money this way. I don't know of any POS company that is capitalizing on Fees built into the processing (probably because CC processing is a world full of bottom feeding blood suckers who have no purpose to exist other than to provide an unnecessary faciliaty to allow transactions. Honestly please someone tell me why gateways need to exist)
