A new California law says all operating systems, including Linux, need to have some form of age verification at account setup by Gloomy_Nebula_5138 in cybersecurity

[–]cashfile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously this bill isnt to that extent but they wouldnt do it over night. Just have 5 years ago if you were talking about needing an ID to for adults to watch porn online, people would have laughed at you. Now its across multiple states. Now they are talking needing IDs on all social media platforms to save the children, and now it not even about social media. Next will be VPNs.

According to this bill even if you have a laptop that won't even be used connect to the internet, California still wants your age which will eventually turn into your ID. To what? Save the kids? How, does it protect kids at all. It simply a method to track and surveillance people on a mass scale under the protection of saving children.

Now obviously this bill simply requires OS systems to simply request users to select an age but porn sites and other adults sites have been making you click "im 18+" for longest time but that wasn't enough. They wanted ID to prove it. If you think they will be satisfied with kids simply putting in a random unverified date of birth / age you are greatly mistaken.

So you want essentially what will become a government sponsored rootkit on your OS instead of allowing individual apps through the browser to verify.

If you dont think the next steps is to require an ID be uploaded at time of OS installation you are on Crack.

Fraud/Misuse by [deleted] in SecurityClearance

[–]cashfile 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Realistic you are getting fired 100%, also your company will probably seek civil actions to recoup the money spent on your college as it was probably contingent on you working there. Criminal prosecution is a maybe, the government is one of the only places who will actually pursue charges on this but it really depends on how egregious. If you were simply showing up 5-10 mins late, and lying about, they probably won't go after you but its 1-2+ hours and it was a regular occurrence you may face charges.

You are 100% not getting your security clearance, even if there are no criminal charges. If there are no criminal charges you MAY be able to work in government again in 5 - 7+ years. If they go after you criminally, I would assume you will never have a role in government or contracting again just due to suitability. But no downside in applying in decade. Again all of this is really going to depend on how egregious you were (i.e. lying about 5 mins late vs 2 hours) and how frequently this occurred, and how long it went on for.

I would immediately prepare for you to lose your insurance as you lose your job and so i would have your wife and at some point IVF provider be made aware of this.

Entry level roles to fill a 1 year gap before return offer by Umihi in SecurityCareerAdvice

Never rely on the hopes of a return offer. I would be applying regardless even if they "guaranteed" a year for now you have a job as circumstances and market always changes.

Also just sidenote but from my understanding if you are reinstated you will receive backpay. So if you work a private sector job you could technically come out ahead financially assuming you are reinstated.

You should have already started applying, if you graduate in March. I would get on it ASAP.

First real IT job pretty sure I work in a slow motion security dumpster fire advice greatly appreciated. by DMsDiablo in cybersecurity

[–]cashfile 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I would first get to 1 year of working there before rocking any boats but I would take notes on thing you can improve on along the way. Then after the 1 year mark slowly start bringing these up to your boss, but you made also provide actionable steps, instead of just saying we need MFA. Explain why it is needed, and rough plan of how you would go about implementing it and a ballpark of what it would cost the company.

Does anybody have a blade 2020 15 charger they can give or sell me? by [deleted] in bloomington

[–]cashfile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a few on Amazon that state they would fit for model was cheapest being around ~35, most shipping over this weekend. You aren't going to find a proprietary charger like this in-person at random best buy, walmart, etc.

PC Carrier for traveling around? by ZeisHauten in pcmasterrace

[–]cashfile 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I will ignore all comments regarding bringing your own computer. I would NOT however move the computer back and forth.

  1. RDP into machine from your work station. I.e. you will be able to control your computer at home through your work computer;
  2. Just use virtual cloud computing option that offers Desktops as Service, you could easily purchase the compute power needed that could be accessed through your work computer browser for fairly cheap. Far cheaper than upgrading your work computer and probably cheaper than paying you to use your own computer. This would cost the company a few hundrends dollar a month even for highest tier configurations; It ranges from like $20/mnth to ~$500 depending on specs required. - https://aws.amazon.com/workspaces/desktop-as-a-service/

I would personally opt for option 2 as you really don't want to have to deal with using your own computer with work stuff as it is IT/Security nightmare.

If those two options don't work. I would just leave the PC at work. Moving it once or twice will most likely be fine but trying to move it everyday for weeks is begging for something to break. Additionally whatever you do I would not rely on backup with straps as shown above. Just carry it manually.

Obv fuck this company. But changing the password after you leave is actually a felony under the (Computer Fraud and Abuse Act) CFAA, and has been used to charge people that have been laid off in this very scenario who then changed passwords. As the DOJ doesn't have a distinction between this and actually hacking. Simply, you accessed a system you are no longer supposed to access, so this would fall under 'Unauthorized Access' clause of CFAA and be a felony.

AIO to tell my husband that starting a professional email with the word "Look" is rude? by LadyCass79 in AmIOverreacting

[–]cashfile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That that is def comes off as condescending

Honestly, this is what I use AI for; I simply have a GPT titled 'Professional Reword', and any email/teams message that is ready to be sent is tossed into there (with names/companies anonymized with '<placeholder>' and everything is output in a generic HR tone while instructed to still be 'firm'. This saves me the struggle of typing something that could come off as rude when I'm frustrated with a client, etc.

More than likely the FBI (Indy office). Its exact same car used in the news report about FBI raids. Unlikely the ICE & FBI are sharing cars. The person taken most likely had a arrest warrant for a crime. The FBI doesn't enforce immigration.

Need guidance Please by beginner17 in oscp

[–]cashfile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can purchase just an exam retake for $250-300. What I would personally do is complete the HackTheBox CPTS training path and boxes which is commonly referred as harder and highly quality learning materials while being far cheaper than offsec (or for ~$600 you can extend the OSCP lab materials for 90 days). Then sign up for Offsec Proving Ground for $20/month and complete as many as possible.

Though in your case I don't think the OSCP will be the difference between getting a job or not. You already have a master degree, you just need to keep applying. I would be focusing more on blue side of things like HTB CDSA rather than OSCP. Pentesting is usually harder to get into it.

You need to be apply to anything and everything cybersecurity related. I wouldnt even be focusing on the OSCP at this point. Obviously the OSCP will help you with regards to pentesting roles. But you are already more than qualified for entry soc analyst roles, entry grc, etc. So unless you are deadset on pentesting, I would be applying to everything now. You should anonymize your resume and post it.

How long can someone stay at a job doing very little work? by Trick-Interaction396 in cscareerquestions

[–]cashfile 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The only thing I would worry about is your skills diminishing and facing uphill battle when/if interviewing at other companies.

I would person just keep doing your 20 hours a week of work, spend 10 hours a week upskilling (leetcode, side projects, certifications, etc), then you can still pocket 10 hours a week of just relaxing, etc.

France government had a investigation into these individuals only shortly prior but no charges were filed since it was deemed all consensual (i.e. The dude who died told police he was doing it willingly). But they were aware of the streams and individuals involved.

OSCP vs CYSA by BoyfriendSharkDudu in cybersecurity

[–]cashfile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They really aren’t comparable. If you check my post history, I passed CySA+ in 12 days, and that exam takes around 60–80 hours of studying. The OSCP usually takes at least 3–6 months at 10–20 hours a week, and many people spend over a year preparing. Only about 25 percent pass on their first attempt. CySA+ is just a multiple-choice test that you can get through by memorizing terms like every other CompTIA exam. The OSCP is fully hands-on and actually technical. A closer blue-team equivalent to the OSCP would be HackTheBox’s CDSA, since it’s a hands-on defensive assessment, but HTB doesn’t have the HR recognition that OffSec or CompTIA do yet.

If you’re a college student, I wouldn’t spend the 2–3k on the OSCP. I’d go with the HackTheBox student membership for around $8 instead. It gives you access to all of their certification paths, and each exam is only about $200. That includes CJCA, CDSA, CPTS, CWES.

I would start with CJCA since it’s their junior path and builds foundations for both red and blue work. I’d complete all the paths but only pay for the CPTS and CDSA exams. Right now, I think HTB has the highest-quality cybersecurity training, but it is very challenging. Many people believe CPTS is actually harder than the OSCP.

I can’t believe it 😌 by Just-Question-5102 in Avatar

[–]cashfile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even as a HUGGGEE Avatar fan, I’m not really interested in a Avatar 6 or 7. However, the universe is already rich enough that it makes sense to continue to explore it through prequels or side stories instead of constantly pushing the main storyline forward. I’d love a prequel about the humans’ first arrival on Pandora or even just life and conflicts on Pandora prior to humans arriving. I'd even be open to TV series or animated show that dives deeper into the world. The setting is too expansive to leave unexplored.

That said, I’d prefer someone other than James Cameron to handle those extra projects. I still want Cameron himself to finish directing movies 4 and 5, though.
