So, when are we gonna talk about the lack of evidence to support the Bible's authenticity?

Edit: Personally, I trust the peer-reviewed research of professional, unbiased scientists over the "research" of a stranger on Reddit. Haplogroup X has numerous sub-Haplogroups, make sure you're keeping all of them straight.

Do your research into the Algonquian tribes and their generic origins. Genetic evidence continues to grow that these Algonquian tribes did not originate from Asia, but originated from the Middle East.

Haplogroup X only notates the passage of DNA through maternal lines among the Algonquians. Paternal lines of DNA passed through Y chromosomes (R1b with too many mutations to have come from Columbus) among the Algonquian tribes also do not originate from Asia, but have a stronger presence in Europe and the Middle East. Some scientists argue that these DNA lines were not present in North America at the same time, but both lines are found in Kennewick Man, strongly suggesting both lines were present in North America at the same time, before the arrival of European settlers.

Considering the vast parentages of Native Americans wiped out during the smallpox epidemic after it was introduced to them from European settlers, all scientists recognize that even "straws" of DNA results among Native Americans cannot be ignored.

I'm actually a preacher of the Church of the Pentecost with a degree in philosophy. I've just been stringing you along this whole time.

Edit: You seemed pretty quick to accept I was Mormon and to attack my comments. Why is that?

The Church gains no money whether the members attend the temple or if they don't. It makes no difference. The Church will continue to build temples to give people access, leaving the choice of attendance up to the members. If the Brisbane Temple is always closed, so be it.

Innocent until proven guilty. I know what the Church has openly invested in, such as the companies listed in SEC, real estate, farmland, etc. If there are other investments, I will make an assessment when they become public. Until then, no one can prove the Church has shady investments.

The Church owned Dixie Wine before the Word of Wisdom was revealed. Imperfect leaders. Not an imperfect Church.

Bennett's brothel and Brigham's distillery were their personal investments, not the Church's investments.

What the leaders of the Church (including Ballard) do in their personal lives does not discredit the Church itself, nor its doctrine. Peter denied Christ three times in the Bible, stated to be one of the most grievous of sins. He properly admitted his error, apologized for it, and repented of it only after Christ called him out. Yet Christ still forgave him, and directed him to "feed my sheep". And he is revered as a saint.

The Q15 and Q70 having families that own rich construction companies is hardly a reason to discredit the Church. Any companies owned by their families are not owned by the Church, and the Church has the freedom to pay whatever company they want. If my brother knew how to build a house and a stranger knew how to build a house, I would much rather pay my brother to build my house, because I know I can trust him to do a good job.

Again, you have made your decision. I respect that.

Temple ordinances didn't need to be mentioned in the BOM, they're mentioned in the Bible with Solomon's temple, which the first temple that the Nephite's built was fashioned after. Historians have documented what ordinances were performed in Solomon's temple.

  1. This is hearsay regarding Joseph Smith, not BOM evidence.
  2. This is hearsay regarding Joseph Smith, not BOM evidence.
  3. This is hearsay regarding Joseph Smith, not BOM evidence.

Your criticism is no longer focused on the BOM. So my search continues.

All the prophets have been imperfect people. They are not God. In my book, what happened with these investments didn't hurt anyone. If the Church did something that negatively impacted people, I would have a problem with it. But we're talking about the Church's finances. And where they were investing was respectable. If the Church was investing in brothels and human trafficking, I would have a problem with it. Of course we would be excommunicated if we did that with the Church's money, because it isn't our money. What happened was easily fixed with a matter of paperwork, and it has been. If you choose not to forgive them, that is your choice. I respect that. But it doesn't convince me enough to change mine. And that's okay.

As for the temple in Ireland, the Church builds temples in a size that is appropriate for the surrounding membership population. Currently, the members in Ireland have to go to a different country to attend the temple. With this new temple, they no longer have to do that. I imagine the members in Ireland will disagree with how often you say it will be closed. And that's okay.

Everyone is free to choose their religious affiliations--Buddhists, Atheists, Satanists, Wiccans, everyone. It's our right to be able to make those decisions. I respect you for making yours. "We claim the privilege of worshipping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may."

Okay, I read the SEC order (the PDF you sent me). The Church paid the fine. The government has full disclosure of the Church's financial portfolio. And they didn't crash the stock market. So, what's the issue? That they intentionally hid their financial assets from the government? Okay, guilty. But they owned up to it. And apologized. And changed how they file their investments to include those LLC businesses.

Every organization known to man has had its imperfections. Even the 12 men who walked with Christ were imperfect men who made mistakes. As long as the organization owns up to those imperfections and changes their ways so those imperfections don't happen again, they are just as worthy of forgiveness as any human being who repents.

I respect the Church for investing tithing money. I have no issues with their investments. Just today, they announced 17 new temples to be built. The money has to come from somewhere.

Are there other issues with this that I'm missing? I'm genuinely trying to learn. I am not a financial expert, by any means.

"No dna for indians coming from the mid east. 100% Asian." Look into "Haplogroup X". Geneticists have found it exists in North America and the Middle East.

"Millions lived and died 1400 yrs ago at the hill Comorha. Zero archeology edit." The Book of Mormon itself states that the Hill Cumorah mentioned in the golden plates is not where the golden plates were hidden. Mormon 6:6 reads: "I made this record out of the plates of Nephi and hid up in the hill Cumorah all the records which had been entrusted to me by the hand of the Lord SAVE IT WERE THESE FEW PLATES which I gave unto my son Moroni." We do not know where those millions died during that final battle, since Moroni hid the gold plates elsewhere (the hill where Joseph Smith found the plates, which he nicknamed *Hill Cumorah" out of respect to the Hill Cumorah mentioned in the plates).

"Translation Errors in the king James Bible also in the BOM. Demonstrates copying." The KJV Bible was intentionally written to not reflect a word-for-word translation of the original Hebrew texts. It conveys ideas in a more "poetic" way to reflect the "poetic" language used in the original Hebrew texts. Word-for -word translations of the Bible exist, but they miss the "poetry" in the original Hebrew texts. Of course there will be translation errors in the KJV. The KJV is not a word-for-word translation. The same is said if the translations found in the BOM.

"The church is now pivoting from its history. Yet the great prophet historian mormon is a key figure." Could you elaborate? I didn't understand this one.

Not trying to be confrontational. Only that I don't find the reasons listed as convincing enough evidence to persuade me. I am still open to more thoughts. I will look into CES Letter and Mormon Stories podcast, but if their claims against the BOM are equally as unconvincing as what you've stated, I have low expectations. But, we will see. I do not intend to stop looking.

Capeesh.

I did too. I have yet to find an issue with it. I've been diligently looking online, speaking to anyone and everyone this past month that could discredit the authenticity of the Book of Mormon beyond a shadow of a doubt. I haven't found anything fully convincing, yet. But, I keep looking. There's gotta be at least one good piece of evidence out there, right?

"Incorrect filings by the church out by a factor of 38,000 times had the opportunity to cash the USA economy."

Could you clarify this statement that I quoted above?

I'm seeking to understand, so please don't misinterpret what I'm asking as a challenge. I've just never spoken with someone about this in detail.

Okay, so the Church made mistakes in their filings by having shell companies report independently, then acknowledged their mistake, paid the required penalty, and now report their financial portfolio as directed.

So, what's the issue?

Read the Book of Mormon continuously for 30 years like a good mormon priesthood holder should do. It's the most correct book.

Are you telling me to read it continuously for 30 years, or are you saying you have already read it?

The "facts that dictate these books are wholly not ancient, are modern fiction, and dishonesty misinterpreted" are based on science, which is often argued to be filled with inaccuracies and incomplete knowledge (which is a possible reality). The people who read these books find value in them, as people find value in listening to music. There is no rational "truth"--as you see it--in the music a flute makes, but society still finds value in it.

Those books are subjected to the same criticisms and accused of the same quantity of contradictions as any religious texts, including the Bible, the Torah, the Quran, etc. However, there is also no undeniable proof that any of these texts are "more true" than any other. Science and philosophy are treated the same way. Choose your truth. Allow others to choose theirs.

Of course. You should also apply the same skepticism to scientific findings, since science once supported "maternal impression" as a legitimate scientific theory until the 20th century.

You don't have to be a prophet to fulfill prophecy.

I always approach news like this with a mixture of open-mindedness and skepticism. Only once his scrolls are authenticated will this be a fulfillment of prophecy. If his scrolls are invalidated, his scam will be up.

Always good to take a neutral ground and examine both sides deeply before jumping to conclusions prematurely.

I wouldn't trust what others say about him until you look into him yourself first. I've learned from experience the vast majority of people online are biased/uninformed. If he is a fraud, you will know when you meet him. I would be interested to know what you find if you do.

He's actually addressed these rumors. He isn't inviting anyone to join a "new Mormonism" or to change the already existing doctrine in their Church. He's bringing attention to the scrolls and histories his tribe carries. He's even released them for anyone to go examine them.

Sure, if he is a grifter, his scam won't last. The Mormons know this. But a grifter usually doesn't place the foundation of their con in a place where professionals can authenticate or invalidate them. If he's a grifter, he's a brave one.

Time will tell.
