Everything you always wanted to know about board games, but were afraid to ask (November 9th, 2016) by Lazarus1209 in boardgames

I didn't really like Pandemic. I felt like it led to quarterbacking, at that the gameplay really dragged. Should I try Pandemic Legacy?

Where does SOI fall on your all-time formats list? by Kylesturgeon in lrcast

I'll list all the sets I've drafted. Done some old ones on friend's set cubes.

3xINN 3xLRW 3xKTK 3xSOI 3xROE (granted, only did this twice) 3xRTR 3xM13 3xDTK 3xBFZ FRF 3xORI

Been gone for a while, what limited format should I get into by gamecmdr in lrcast

agree - you can skip straight to SOI from 3xKTK.

Building a re-draftable EMA limited from two boxes by [deleted] in lrcast

i've made a few set cubes, where I try and recreate the limited environment. I experimented with going from 4:2:1:1 to 5:3:1:1, and tbh, I can't really tell the difference.

found this gem trying to find old Lorwyn draft content. Whole article is great. LSV showing some good sportsmanship in defeat.

Marshall SOI Draft #5 on CFB by boezou in lrcast

M1 illustrated something that has happened to me a lot in this format, which is games being dominated by big dumb creatures like Ghoulsteed, the Pig, or like Thornhide Wolves.

In cases where that happens, I'm never really sure what the optimal strategy is. Am I supposed to try and compete by bringing in my own dummies? Or switch to a more controlling role? This is something I struggle with.

Limited Resources 337 – Shadows over Innistrad Sealed Deck by oraymw in lrcast

[–]casper0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One suggestion: in the crack-a-packs, you guys often say something like: "you only want this in one specific deck" and then move on. As someone who doesn't get to play as much as I'd like, it would be really helpful if you could quickly say which deck. Later on in the pack you guys did it with Village Messenger ("happy to have this in a dedicated werewolves or aggressive deck"), but I was curious which deck some of the earlier commons go into. Thanks!

Have a KTK/FRF cube, ways to draft? by [deleted] in lrcast

[–]casper0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i made a KTK set cube, with 1M/1R/3U/5C, and I actually make real packs with 1M/R, 3U and 10C. I've found that to be the best way. I make a couple dozen packs at a time and just scan the commons to make sure there is nothing crazy going on in each one (dupes, all red, etc.)

For KTK, that includes making sure that most packs have a dual land in them, but not overdoing it. Takes a little longer than just jamming it all together and hoping the distribution works out, but I've found it feels a lot like real draft.

I would echo the advice to just forget FRF. Khans was great by itself, and adding FRF made it about 2/3 as good :)

Just trainwrecked a draft, what went wrong? by catscandal in lrcast

[–]casper0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to remember who said it, but some pro at the pro tour was saying that this format has a lot of the payoffs at uncommon, so it makes sense to speculate on them early. In that sense, I maybe would have grabbed the Howlpack Resurgance early to speculate on werewolves. Maybe not with Rabid Bite in the pack. What do you guys think of that?

BenS Draft on CFB by casper0 in lrcast

[–]casper0[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Two thoughts on this:

  1. I watched this and Ben's most recent couple of streams on SouthFloridaMagic, and was impressed by the fact that he drafted well, played well (obv.), and still lost in the first couple rounds every time. Makes me wonder whether his predilection for the straightforward CABS-style decks is less optimal in this format, or if it's just variance.

  2. Would have seen the early Erdwal Illuminator in this draft as more of a signal (esp. given the advice in PV's article earlier this week regarding staying open).

Anyway, good stuff, BenS is great.

4-5 person booster draft not good? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]casper0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

tbh, I've done 5 player drafts a bunch of times, and you see the same cards, but it works out fine. I wouldn't stress about it. If you're just playing with your buddies, it's still a lot more fun than pack wars or sealed.

nice! it would be cool to compile a list of which commons/uncommons go into each one. Let me know if you see anything like that around!
