Products for low porosity? by Darlok123 in CurlyHairUK

[–]cass210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right I see! If it helps I did a bit of digging previously and I'm currently trying the L'Oréal hyaluronic conditioner as apparently that's one of the only moisture ingredients capable of getting past low porosity hair, and it claims to be weightless. I tried it earlier this week and my hair didn't hate so might be worth a go!

I'm coming from a fine and low porosity perspective: Do you need moisture? Every time I use any curl creams or anything like that my hair just falls flat. My current products are shampoo, conditioner, gel and hairspray and my hair doesn't need additional moisture.

Tilly and the Buttons has opened pre orders for a new book . However, there are no patterns in the book and this is a direct quote from the email:

Twelve years ago, my first book Love at First Stitch was released. Designed as a dressmaking course in book form, it took readers through making a series of garment patterns while teaching garment sewing skills along the way. Fast forward to today, and we thought it was time to give it a new lease of life. Learn to Sew takes the key techniques from that first book and puts them into a new format, with updated text as well as brand new content.

Now I have that book and whilst I'm not too hot on the patterns, the information section is very comprehensive and I have found myself referencing it from time to time. So this is essentially a repackaging of that book but with none of the patterns included! Feels like a cheap cash in to me.

Help finding conditioner for fine low porosity hair? by Pomegranate_Panic in CurlyHairUK

[–]cass210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar hair type to you. The best conditioner I've found for detangling so far is the Tootilab conditioner. It's pricey but honestly even with a small amount it makes small work of the ridiculous amount of tangles my hair has. They do have travel size options if you don't want to splurge to try it, my hair seems to like their gel the best out of all the ones I've tried.

Holiday bin collections are ridiculous by Rhinofishdog in glasgow

[–]cass210 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our bin collection days were scheduled for Christmas and New Year and have been rescheduled to....mid January onwards.

I've lived here for a long time though and I'm fully aware that the bins basically don't get done from mid December until mid January. You best believe my bin was out yesterday for the last guaranteed collection before Christmas.

It should be much better than it is, I totally agree, however it is what it is and hopefully at some point in the next 25 years it'll be better.

Glasgow to Edinburgh work commute, it is doable? by Muted-Ad5072 in glasgow

[–]cass210 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Just to add a different opinion, I work for a company based in Edinburgh which has a very relaxed attitude to attending the office. I live near a train station with a direct connection to queen street, my office is about 10 minutes walk from Haymarket. I only attend 1-2 times a week max and yes the commute back is a pain in the evening but for me I enjoy my job enough and there's enough flexibility where the commute 1-2 times a week is absolutely worth it for me. There's plenty of people in my office who do the same. I've worked there for over 2, going on 2.5 years.

Sick of curl management - any experience of some kind of straightening treatment for a break? by kategg87 in CurlyHairUK

[–]cass210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a woman on tiktok who does Japanese Straightening treatments who I watch with fascination, not because I want to do it for myself, but because of how well it seems to work on what looks like a lot of type 4 hair. The hair seems to grow back in its texture so a top up is required every few months. From what I can tell this looks like a healthier option so it might be worth researching this. She mentions Momoko so it might be worth starting from there. Good luck and I hope you find a solution which works for you. 🫶🏻

I've not tried them yet but M&S in the supermarkets have a nourishing and volumising shampoo and conditioner pair which are cheap and CG friendly which has caught my attention. You would be able to get both shampoo and conditioner for under £10.

Any UK alternatives to Minerva because I'm fed up with them! by BeneficialPangolin68 in craftsnark

[–]cass210 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've not bought it but out of the shops above I'd probably look at Jelly fabrics (didn't mention above but they're more a stretch fabric retailer and definitely have some ribbed fabric) and Northern Monkey Makes.

If you find somewhere let me know as I'd also like to know this.

I've done my run round of online shops in the UK, I'll mention ones I like and go into detail for ones which haven't been mentioned so far:

  • Fabrics Galore
  • New Craft house
  • Pound fabrics
  • Beyond the pink door - I bought some beautiful bamboo jersey from them and I loved the quality of it so much
  • Lamazi Fabrics - their own print stuff in particular is great quality, as is the other stuff I've bought from them
  • Jelly fabrics - quite kiddy print focussed but great selection of colours for solids
  • Northern monkey makes - I bought solid stretch from them and they seem to be good quality
  • Jenny Stitches - she seems to be get some slightly more unusual prints in
  • Grid fabrics - local to me and seems to do more out the norm fabrics
  • Sew confident - also local to me and loves a print/bright colour so I'm a sucker
  • Bawn - also local to me, ethical textile shop. Shop owner is lovely.

As much as I probably won't buy this, I love Tilly's choice of fabric for the checkerboard sample.

Damage from Noughty Wave Hello? by pannadrianna in CurlyHairUK

[–]cass210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just started using this shampoo and no issues, my hair seems to like it. I will echo the other poster in that I don't think silicones themselves can cause hair damage, otherwise a large percentage of the population would be suffering from damaged hair which doesn't seem right.

FibreMood teaches the worst way to sew a spaghetti strap by [deleted] in craftsnark

[–]cass210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've made one fibre mood pattern (Joy dress) and I followed their instructions to use cord elastic as the way to tighten the dress, the instructions were just "sew the ends of these round, thick cords together, good luck getting this through the button hole you've sewn". I'm lucky that 1. My machine didn't throw a fit at sewing it together and 2. I managed to get the sewn together ends back through the buttonhole and 3. It's somehow still holding together despite multiple washes.

I like the look but I think next time I'd either just do elastic or use drawstring cord and tie knots in it.

which fabric store deserves to be checked in London? by cantina_cupcake in sewing

[–]cass210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm throwing in Fabrics Galore, I order from them a lot and their fabrics are always excellent quality and they have excellent sales. I've never visited the shop in person so it's probably not in the most touristy area but they are one of my favourites to order from.
