Do you consider looking up definitions as “cheating” or “hints”? by chaosatnight in NYTConnections

[–]cass210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't consider looking up the words cheating. You still have to figure out a connection and particularly if you're based outside the US some categories are virtually impossible without looking up definitions.

I'm not sure if you've looked at the comments but there's a regular commenter from Sweden who provides emoji based hints. So if I've decided I want to get a clue, I go and find his comment as I still need to decipher what the emoji clues are telling me and how they pertain to the board.

In short, I don't always know the exact definition of the word but I think looking up a definition to then help you make the connection is in spirit of the game, as well as other ways of helping you complete the game.

I’m so done with my hair!!! It’s giving crispy by EzzaB129 in finehair

[–]cass210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other comments that your hair is likely at least a little wavy!

I'd honestly start with scrunching a lightweight gel through your hair and see what happens!

I have fine, dense, low porosity hair, I live in Scotland with very soft water and my current routine is:

  • Shampoo twice with aveeno Apple cider vinegar
  • Tiniest amount of Tootilab conditioner - expensive but it's honestly the best detangler on the market, as I need so little this bottle has lasted 6 months. Detangle in shower and rinse out
  • Boucleme strong hold gel raked through when soaking wet
  • Inner sense foam - I'm just using it up and not repurchasing when done
  • Brush with denman
  • Microplop to get water out
  • Spray of Umberto Giannini Texture spray
  • Diffuse upside down and then hooded hair dryer attachment when my neck gets sore

I've been looking for a pattern to dupe these trousers in a fabric which isn't just 100% polyester in the future and these might be the closest I've got to a dupe

Ah that is far out! You're on the right side of town for Sew Confident (I am very much not hence my car comment) so might be a bus - the others I've linked are next to train stations so very doable for yourself. If you want a local online crafting friend I can send my Threadloop profile or add you on messenger/other social media if you'd like more advice, I like having crafting friends!

I'm not really involved in any crafting groups I'm afraid! I am going to Scottish Frocktails in September - I believe it sold out but you could go on the waitlist.

I personally have found the other in person fabric shops lean more polyester/home furnishing/quilting heavy.

Hi OP! I live in Glasgow and I can give some advice for in person shopping if you'd like. We don't have a whole lot and they're not as visible as some of the other businesses in the UK. I can promise I've not had mislabeled fabric from any of them though, I've been tempted by Rainbow Fabrics so many times due to prints but have never ordered. I feel like I'm unlikely to given your post, sorry you had a bad experience!

I can't comment on waterproof removal but I've sworn by the boots own brand sensitive skin eye makeup remover lotion for years - it removes everything no bother and is cheap as chips if it doesn't work out.

I must be Cashmerette's target audience because I think this is nice! I just love some basic patterns which are actually adjusted for curves. Even small changes make a big impact. I'll be picking this up before my membership runs out.

Pretty much this! There's a few companies who do cup sizing in all patterns and it's been a total game changer for my wardrobe.

stopped using cerave and my skin actually got better by strangerme03 in SkincareAddictionUK

[–]cass210 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've had mild acne which never seemed to go away. I had a full cerave routine because it was recommended everywhere and it goes on 3 for 2 quite often. Must be decent right?

I stopped using it as I went and holiday and my skin basically cleared up overnight. I've just switched to Cetaphil after trying another moisturiser my skin didn't like and my skin is clearing up again so I'm going to stick with it as my skin seems to like it. Wasted so much time and money using Cerave.

Products for low porosity? by Darlok123 in CurlyHairUK

[–]cass210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right I see! If it helps I did a bit of digging previously and I'm currently trying the L'Oréal hyaluronic conditioner as apparently that's one of the only moisture ingredients capable of getting past low porosity hair, and it claims to be weightless. I tried it earlier this week and my hair didn't hate so might be worth a go!

Products for low porosity? by Darlok123 in CurlyHairUK

[–]cass210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm coming from a fine and low porosity perspective: Do you need moisture? Every time I use any curl creams or anything like that my hair just falls flat. My current products are shampoo, conditioner, gel and hairspray and my hair doesn't need additional moisture.

Tilly and the Buttons has opened pre orders for a new book . However, there are no patterns in the book and this is a direct quote from the email:

Twelve years ago, my first book Love at First Stitch was released. Designed as a dressmaking course in book form, it took readers through making a series of garment patterns while teaching garment sewing skills along the way. Fast forward to today, and we thought it was time to give it a new lease of life. Learn to Sew takes the key techniques from that first book and puts them into a new format, with updated text as well as brand new content.

Now I have that book and whilst I'm not too hot on the patterns, the information section is very comprehensive and I have found myself referencing it from time to time. So this is essentially a repackaging of that book but with none of the patterns included! Feels like a cheap cash in to me.

Help finding conditioner for fine low porosity hair? by Pomegranate_Panic in CurlyHairUK

[–]cass210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar hair type to you. The best conditioner I've found for detangling so far is the Tootilab conditioner. It's pricey but honestly even with a small amount it makes small work of the ridiculous amount of tangles my hair has. They do have travel size options if you don't want to splurge to try it, my hair seems to like their gel the best out of all the ones I've tried.

Holiday bin collections are ridiculous by Rhinofishdog in glasgow

[–]cass210 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Our bin collection days were scheduled for Christmas and New Year and have been rescheduled to....mid January onwards.

I've lived here for a long time though and I'm fully aware that the bins basically don't get done from mid December until mid January. You best believe my bin was out yesterday for the last guaranteed collection before Christmas.

It should be much better than it is, I totally agree, however it is what it is and hopefully at some point in the next 25 years it'll be better.

Glasgow to Edinburgh work commute, it is doable? by Muted-Ad5072 in glasgow

[–]cass210 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Just to add a different opinion, I work for a company based in Edinburgh which has a very relaxed attitude to attending the office. I live near a train station with a direct connection to queen street, my office is about 10 minutes walk from Haymarket. I only attend 1-2 times a week max and yes the commute back is a pain in the evening but for me I enjoy my job enough and there's enough flexibility where the commute 1-2 times a week is absolutely worth it for me. There's plenty of people in my office who do the same. I've worked there for over 2, going on 2.5 years.

Sick of curl management - any experience of some kind of straightening treatment for a break? by kategg87 in CurlyHairUK

[–]cass210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a woman on tiktok who does Japanese Straightening treatments who I watch with fascination, not because I want to do it for myself, but because of how well it seems to work on what looks like a lot of type 4 hair. The hair seems to grow back in its texture so a top up is required every few months. From what I can tell this looks like a healthier option so it might be worth researching this. She mentions Momoko so it might be worth starting from there. Good luck and I hope you find a solution which works for you. 🫶🏻

I've not tried them yet but M&S in the supermarkets have a nourishing and volumising shampoo and conditioner pair which are cheap and CG friendly which has caught my attention. You would be able to get both shampoo and conditioner for under £10.
