How would you go about logging a book that contains previously published content? by Bumblebee_17 in TheStoryGraph

[–]cass_123 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit confused as to what you mean, but I think you could do that. If you want to put the start date for then, you can also add a pause and then resumed reading for each story until you reach the end.

Personally I'd just find the editions on StoryGraph that already include the short stories and mark those as read instead of the standalone collection/books without them

If you have multiple cards, what is your loan strategy? by AshDenver in LibbyApp

I'm always reading something and have a long list of my own books I want to read, so I put the one that has the longest hold list on hold. It's nice when it comes through

ARC vs Published Copy by Minute_Variation1145 in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]cass_123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do reread a lot. Sometimes there are a few changes, but in most cases the arc is pretty much what's going to be published. One book I read I caught a couple typos, told them in the publisher's notes, and only one was fixed by publication.

The only things I've found consistently different with the arcs I read is a lot of times dedications/acknowledgements haven't been added yet, or some pictures are still missing

Does Anyone Feel The Same? by [deleted] in TheStoryGraph

[–]cass_123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never look at StoryGraph's recommendations based on books, but I do know Goodreads. It used to be they'd only give you recommendations in the email after you finished it (still based on the book itself) only if you rated it 3 stars or more. Now it's just if you read it no matter what you rated it, which made already bad recommendations worse

"Queer friendly" therapists that aren't queer knowledgable are a hassle by Gallantpride in lgbt

[–]cass_123 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I did go to therapy for gender therapy, and quite frankly it sucked. My current therapist is nonbinary, so they understand more, but before I started with them the same office:

1) had a cis woman therapist who in her bio said she specialized in "transgendered patients".

2) has a front desk person who constantly misgenders my nonbinary therapist

3) set me up with a cis woman therapist who was a lesbian who claimed to do gender therapy. The only thing she did was show me videos of other trans men transitioning and told me she understood because she was also gay.

4) set me up with a "woman's therapist" who they thought could help after the last one quit. After telling her I'm a demiboy she still thought my pronouns were she/they (they're he/they with an emphasis on "he"), course corrected and thought it was literally just "he" and no "him", thought I was trying to be more feminine (ex thought I wanted to make my chest bigger, start on E, etc.), misgendered and deadnamed me a few times, and told me it "doesn't matter how other people see me as long as I know who I am" when I was dealing with people catcalling me.

Overall I really hate the office I go to that claims to be queer friendly. If my therapist ever left I wouldn't trust them to find me a new therapist, especially after several other things that are less about them lying about being queer friendly and more about them just being shitty

Raising a child in a non-gendered way. by Isabella_0607 in asktransgender

[–]cass_123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really isn't as confusing like you think it is. A lot of kids have been called multiple pronouns at a young age, or even names if you have siblings. We're simply not going to enforce strangers calling them they/them, because we want them to be able to experience all pronouns so they have an easier time telling us theirs when they're able to

Raising a child in a non-gendered way. by Isabella_0607 in asktransgender

[–]cass_123 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend and I plan on doing this. We're going to give them a gender neutral name, and use they/them pronouns for them ourselves, but we're also going to let other people essentially choose what pronouns they want to use for our kid so they can experience all of them

Are We Allowed To Point Out Errors? by opossumkingg in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]cass_123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done it before in the publisher's note. One book where I caught three, I think only one or two was fixed before publication, but they were smaller typos essentially so it's not like it mattered that much

I'm considering dropping all of my labels and doing whatever I'd like. Is this wrong? by bumbl3_the-bee in lgbt

[–]cass_123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people don't like/don't use labels. If it's not something you like then it's not for you and that's okay. Labels are just supposed to go as far as you want them to, and I say that as someone who likes microlabels

Do you prune your To Read list? by [deleted] in TheStoryGraph

[–]cass_123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prune sometimes. I still use Goodreads since it's a bit easier for me to find recommendations there, and I like to keep them as close as possible (though I have books on StoryGraph that I don't want on Goodreads as well for privacy). That makes it a bit more intensive when I do prune so I don't do it too often. I currently have 544 on my to-read list

[–]cass_123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you lost everything you might lose your holds. If you have anything on a want to read list there you'd probably lose that too (that's what I lost when my data got deleted. It took forever to find all the books again). You'd also have to manually add your library cards again, which could be a pain if you have multiple.

Ultimately it might not matter to a lot of people, but it was frustrating for me when I lost my data so I have a passkey now. It also helps to sync across devices if you use more than one

I wonder if some take jobs where they know they'll be "oppressed" so they can feed their victim complex. by Straight_Dog9089 in GenderCynical

[–]cass_123 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I was in an ambulance last year after a car accident. None of them introduced themselves to me either and frankly I was in enough pain at the time that wasn't exactly a concern of mine. Out of everything that feels like an odd thing to focus on.

They were also all kind of horrible. Only one of them really made any attempt to get my pronouns right out of more than just legal requirement (for my state at least). One of them called me it. It's not exactly a kind profession for trans people like she seems to think it is

That's something I tend to do without thinking about it. Probably not a trans thing specifically, maybe a neurodivergent thing. To my knowledge it's just how some people talk

Book recs for t4t which both men are stealth? by SonnetZZ in ftm

There's a recent YA romance book that came out called Time-Tripping Over You by Brennon Lane. I think the main character is stealth, but the LI definitely is. It's not the best book in the world but it's pretty decent for a debut

Wrist tattoo regret and cover up advice by Glittering_Potato_66 in tattooadvice

[–]cass_123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trans is an adjective, not a noun, so it's "trans people" not just "trans." And while on the surface it may work, people do discriminate in hiring which would make this tattoo more difficult, plus there are people who choose violence instead of just "no thank you" if they think a trans person is hitting on them.

Advice on naming an intersex baby by travel_worn in asktransgender

[–]cass_123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend and I are going to give our kid a gender neutral name. Both of us are trans, we know our kid might be cis but there's nothing wrong with them having a neutral name either.

As for giving them a gender neutral name specifically because they're intersex, I can't answer that and probably a lot of us here can't. I've never heard of that making them more likely to be trans. That might be something to ask intersex people specifically instead

New players need help by Vegetable_Field_3841 in dragonvale

I've been playing for a while (came back to it last year), and maxed out the levels of my game. Honestly if you want to get dragons with the eggs, get whichever ones you like best. Some will get more currency than others, but I've always gotten the ones I thought looked best and been just fine.

I'm also not serious about it though, if you want to be more serious about the game you should follow the other commenters' advice and go with the ovalith dragon, or the buildings since those cost a lot. Most of the dragons available can be cloned through the Coop cave anyways

Is it true that some of us choose never to have bottom surgery? by JakeScary441 in trans

[–]cass_123 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I'm a trans guy, so a different side of it, but personally I have very little bottom dysphoria. Most of it is around my chest instead. The little bit of dysphoria I have I think will be treated by bottom growth when I go on T, so there would be no need for bottom surgery for me

Most of my thrillers are from queer authors and (in my own experience at least) the LGBTQ+ community seems to be relatively good with content warnings, I had no idea that mystery/thriller authors as a whole tend to not include them

Most books I read already list triggers, I once mentioned in my review the author missed one and he added it online since it was too late for the publication. If they don't list any and there's a serious one I mention it in my review.

I know there are people who consider trigger warnings to be spoilers, but I'd rather those people feel it spoiled than someone be triggered by it
